I'm trying to do the mechassault softmod w/ a USB drive. I've had success doing it with other xboxes in the past. i'm using xebian basic 2.4 to copy the MA gamesave onto the USB drive. When I attempt to copy the files over, I get an error saying "cannot create directory... read only file system". it seems as though this xbox has formatted my key differently so that it's a sort of read-only fatx format. is there any way around this to get the gamesave onto the USB drive, pref a xebian solution? thanks

AR is a windows app, and he's not running windows.
Try to delete the partition on the USB drive and recreate the FS. _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

Found that link on the xbox-linux usb section... The gist is this:
Insert the drive (don't mount it!... or unmount before proceeding.)
type:
lsscsi
If it's lsscsi is installed it'll just verify what SCSI devices are insterted. Linux treats USB disks as SCSI hard drives. I'd just unplug any other (assuming you're not booting off a scsi device) for the sake of simplicity.
Then type (as root - I'm assuming you know what that means)
fdisk /dev/sda
For me, no partitions came up, but punch "p" to list the partitions, and "d" to delete them. Then hit "w" to confirm and write these changes to the drive - even if you didn't really do anything.
then just
fdisk /dev/sda
again, and hit "n" this time, and enter twice. Then "w" again.
Now you can either pull the drive out and let the xbox format it, or try to format it yourself.
mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sda1
would format it Fat32 (for windows and most of the PC world) I suppose you could replace vfat with fatx to format for the xbox, but I've never tried that - I just let the xbox dash do it for me.
Good Luck!

thanks, but didnt work. the xbox didnt read the USB stick at all with the fatx partition i created with mkfs.fatx, even though linux liked it (of course). formatting it with the xbox is not an option either, since that was the probelm to start (makes it read-only fatx and adds other crap i couldnt get rid of). i broke down yesterday and bought an action replay (i also have windows).

Ouch... The AR software can be downloaded right from thier site and the .inf files edited to use a regular USB stick as a AR stick... But I guess it's too late to mention that.
Just for kicks, you might try opening the drive in linux as root... Some drives are auto-mounted as writable by superusers only.
It's worth a shot, anyway.
Oh, the instructions I gave are actually more useful for restoring the USB to its non-xbox format - i.e. fat32. My xbox seemed to enjoy rendering flash disks useless on everything else.
Well, good luck and go penguins! Sorry you have to head back to windows for the final solution.

i tried the action replay software as well. i think the issue lies in the fact that my generation xbox (1.6?) doesn't read USB drives at all, or so i've read. i was very skeptical about that at first, but after spending many hours on this, a $21 AR is not so bad.
