If you've flat out replaced teh HDD you should get error 6, is that the case?
If the HDD is pooched though, you'll need to chip it or build an eeprom reader. _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

Easiest option would probably be a soldierless chip..
Or you could do a hotswap like TheRealHypnotiX mentioned..
Either way you should be able to get the xbox back up and running with a little bit of help..
look in our tutorials area for the hotswap tutorial..
You will need to hook up the xbox hdd to your pc though.
With a modchip fitted you could just burn AID (auto installer deluxe) to a DVD/CDRW and boot it and it would format and prepare everthing nearly automatically.

Well a standard xbox hdd size is 8 gig theres a few that has 10, Chances are if its clicking that bad, you can attempt a hotswap, but most likely your gonna have to chip the xbox and put in a new hdd. heres the hotswap tut http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html _________________

Hey Hell Does This Sound Familiar??? LOL my xbox did the same thing well long story short i need to get a chip so yea did you happen to get a backup of the EEPROM cuz angelos will be able to hook you up with a hdd without you needing a chip if you didnt you will need a chip cuz its about to break. My guess is that the motor thinggy inside the hdd is worn so yea get a new hdd and a chip if you dont have the EEPROM

How big is the drive? an 09 error is rare, but I had it on my own because there was no recognizable FATX file system.
You can download xboxhdm to prepare the HDD, but if it is not locked with the eeprom of the xbox it will not work without a chip.
