Ok, so I found a hardware store near by that sells plexiglass, so I picked up a big sheet. I want to make the top dvd drive clear. I have a phillips drive, and it has this bump that has something that looks like it is intended to spin with the DVD.
I am designing like the attached picture to keep that bump in there. But do I have to? If I just cut out the entire center piece will this damage the drive, my discs, or anything else?

That bump on top of the drive is there to make the metal more rigid. If your doing a plexi top, I'd say you could eliminate it. _________________

ok, I thought you ment the long skinny bump. You ment the circle hump. now I see. You can disect the hump, and sandwich a piece of plexi over the magnet like the picture:

I see in the photo that the disc that sits in the bump seems to be sitting on a metal bracket. Is that nessecary? If I cut a cut a hole in the bottom layer of plexiglass, can I just sit it in snug? Does it need to be free to move?
Would something like the attached be a better method?
I would practice on a dead harddrive first, its better to play it safe. _________________

So I put the plexiglass top on and wow! It looks great!
Won't play anything at all,though
I keep getting DDE. If I swap out the top and put the one from my other DVD drive on it, it plays fine, so I know the drive itself works. But with the clear top nothing plays. Any ideas? _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide
