Not forshure if this is the correct form but check it out

My dad has a pvr, that bit the dust the other day( not the first time). The pvr had a Maxtor 120gb ata/133HD in it. Well it seemed a waste of a hard drive to me, so instead of just throwing it away, we tried to format it with no luck. At first I thought maybe the drive was a locked hard drive, such as the x-boxes used, but that is not the case consitering this happened to him before and he had no problem formating the last drive. Now I am wondering if the drive is even functional. I pluged it in to my main computer and the bios detects it, but I dont know if its functioning. I was wondering with Linux f-disk if I could find out any thing ? On a second note, if it does have some inner encryption, is there any way you can get around it and just format the drive. Data loss doesnt matter I dont care for the contents I just wana be able to use the drive.

Well, I fdisked -l and it lists the hard drive the sectors heads all that good stuff. I can even see the partition tables in linux. I didnt try mounting it. If i use windows xp installation on my other computer to try to format it it just hangs at 0%.

What I plan on useing it for ?

I really dont know at the moment, I thought about putting it in my x-box or just getting another 120gb of space on my file server (fedora core 4).

I havent tried to see if windows can detect it ill try that here in a bit.

even if you're wanting to use windows to do it (sometimes it's easier) make sure (like greven said) to delete any partitions first. If that works, you'll be gold. Then just format and go to town.

If not, try and get a copy of Partition Magic. I, personally have never had a problem with this program, and really reccomend it for a quick and easy way to get your drives done.

Last resort, find some program that formats in DoD standard, and can boot from removable media (flash drive, floppy, CD-RW) and go at it that way.

hopefully he doesnt have to do a low level format, as it can be risky. i have only needed to do that once, on a drive that had bad sectors

true but a hotswap can be fixed, if he screws up on the low level as i have read, it reneders the drive useless period. unlike hotswap you can unlock the hdd in the futre and format it and use the drive again

Never mind this i remembered the command mkfs
the good thing is its attepting to format it right now as ext3

Okay fdisk is detecting it at /dev/hdc
now i went and deleted all the partitions off the disk. Next I told it to create a new partition after that it writes it the disk but now it lacks a file system. My Knowledge of linux fails me at this point, I dont know how to format the disk there isnt a gui program for it, does some one know the cli command, i just wana make it ext3 so i can see if i can write to it.

I got the drive formated finaly. Next I tried to mount it, that went well too. after that I tried to copy a file to it, to see if it would write, That didnt work. So the next thing i tried was a fsck, after I unmounted the drive. The results from that all the inodes are the wrong size the blocks are short reads.... ext ext ext..... its verry strange it lets me partition the drive and format it but then its all haywire after that Sad
