ok, i sent my brother (who is another state) an Xbox modding kit. it consisted of a memory card with the 4.5 softmod, a copy of 007: AUF and a disc with Auto Installer Deluxe 3.03. let me also state that i sent him the actual game and card that i used to mod mine and 3 other Xbox's with, and i also tested the AID disc on my own system by installing the updated version of XBMC i put on there.
now, here is the problem, apparently the softmod went ok, when he boots up, it loads EvoX and if he powers on with the the Eject button it goes to the retail dash. it plays retail games fine but when he tried to put in the AID disc it says something like disc unknown or something (up in the corner of the EvoX dash where it puts the disc title). he has also tried a couple of discs i burned for him with TV shows and stuff (burned in Nero with UDF/ISO, and also tested on my Xbox) and they do the same thing. i know all the discs are DVD+R and burned at 4x speed but i dont think all are the same brand.
i guess my question is if i should go ahead and burn a DVD-R and have him try that to see if just +R doesnt work...or is there something i can have him check somewhere on, in or in the software of the Xbox to see if he has a bad or incompatible drive or something.
also, i dont know the condition of the Xbox itself, he bought it from one of his friends, it works, but i dont know how old it is or how much wear and tear it has seen.

You just said what I was going to say. You should burn a DVD-R for him then try it on your box to make sure it works, then give it to him. Some DVD drives can not read certain types of discs.
Also, ask him what DVD drive he has.
-Samsungs are pretty good and can read just about anything. I have a samsung and it can read CD-R also.
-Phillips are also really good, but I have not had any experience with them.
-Thompson is the crap. It can hardly play anything.
-Hitachi is alright. I had one in my new xbox and it could play DVD+R. It couldn't play CD-R though but it coud play CD-RW. The hitachis are the newest DVD drives. If you bought a xbox recently it is probably a hitachi. The hitachi drive looks like the thompson drive, but it has little holes in the tray.
P.S. Why burn at 4x? I burn at 1x.

It all comes down to media brand, and what burning software youre using if your gonna be burning to DVD+R's try using Alcohol 120, I have found Memorex dvd+R's and burned with Alcohol 120 work in every drive. _________________

thanks for the info guys, i am sending it to him so he can tell me what kind of drive he has.
about the brand of discs and all, some are HP, some are TDK, i think there are some Sony and maybe Memorex. ever since i got my DVD burner 3 or so years ago, i have just pretty much always had good luck with +R, so i stuck with it. same thing with the 4x speed, i have a ton of games, movies, and tv shows that were all burned at that speed and i have never had a problem.
i am going to try Alcohol 120% at 1x speed, and i may even try a +R and a -R just to see if that tells me anything more. i am also gonna tell him to get a DVD lens cleaner and see if that helps. i dont mind burning stuff from here on out at a different speed, brand, or +-, but i was hopping to salvage the handful of things i already burned for him and not to have to reburn them.
once again, thanks. i will post back with any further results.
