hey davey,
Ive heard with aVAlaunch it allows your xbox to download the latest XBOX LIVE CONTENT.. Dont ask me how it works coz i dont know.. Maybe you could try installed the latest AVALAUNCH DASH and give it a go..
I was only talking to a guy on XBCONNECT yesterday about it.. He said he got it to work no probs..
As for music on your xbox hdd:
Launch the retail M$ Dashboard and then insert your audio cd's.. It will ask you if you want to play them or copy them.. You want to copy them to your XBOX HDD.. It wont take stuff all space either cause they are .wma files..
Thats it.. Once you load a game just choose play custom music and it will allow you to listen to your music in any game.
YOU CANNOT copy MP3's etc to your XOBX HDD and listen to them in games.. (well not that i know of)

If I am not mistaken, I posted a news story in July regarding an app that will let you apply music to your xbox and then play withiin your favorite games.
Take a look through July's news archives. I also included the link to our download section for the actual program. I just can't remember what it was called.
