oem xbox drives like samsung, thompson, and philips are all interchangable. Some pc dvd drives can be used (with modification) like hatachi Lg, and samsung 616. DVD burners are not possible, at least you can't burn dvd's with them.

As a note, you can't use a DVDRW in place of the standard xbox dvd drive. However, if you installed a USB port/made a use adapter, and had an external USB DVDRW, AND there was software and drive support for linux, you should be able to load linux on your xbox and burn dvd's from there. This is not test, though I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.

As a side note, anyone know if you can read the xbox DVD drive from inside linux? and if so, does anyone know of a linux app to make for making xbox ISO's?

I don't think that the xbox has enough processing power to handle burning media.

edit: as far as acessing the dvd in linux,
Code:
mount /mnt/cdrom
