First off which softmod package did you use? Some automatically make eeprom backups, also evox for some reason seems more reliable to backup the eeprom for a softmod correctly, I've heard several problems with using config magic and softmods, I would recommend unlocking the hard drive with the disk you made, using evox as an app on the xbox and then going to the settings menu and running a backup, you should be able to find your eeprom there, it's much safer to lock by eeprom than by hand typed hard drive key as there is less room for error.
