First, let me say that I have spent some time searching for the answers here and haven't found a topic that addresses my questions, so don't flame Smile

I'm considering modchipping for what I think are the obvious reasons for chipping vs. softmods. I was looking into the Xecutor chips and noticed that you can disable the new BIOS by holding down the power button longer. This leads me to believe that when disabled the XBox boots the old BIOS, right? And if so, then I could still connect to Live, right?

If I install the chip will I be able to run Linux and switch back to play games from time to time based on enabling or disabling the X3?

Last question. I'm looking at Ebay and wanting to pick up a used XBox. Is there any technical advantage to modding a working XBox vs. fixing one with the Christmas light problem (non-working BIOS)?

I'm sure these are dumb questions, but appreciate any help.

I understand that. But I was asking about modchips specifically because of my question about buying an Xbox on Ebay with a bad BIOS.

The 'christmas tree' problem can sometimes be fixed, but I think it depends on what version Xbox it is. And it usually involves soldering.

Depending on where the problem is, installing a chip may or may not fix the problem. So your probably be best off starting with a functional xbox.

I should probably clarify a couple of things. I've soldered before to fix an APEX DVD player power supply--so I'm not afraid of a little soldering project. My Ebay question is more from a project perspective--I'm almost more interested in seeing if I can resurrect a dead box than having a running unit in the end.

But let me ask in more theoretical terms. Assuming I found a box that had a bad TSOP and no known backup of the original BIOS, and I bought it and fixed it with a mod chip--would I be able to play it on XBL once fixed? I gather that in order to disable the mod chip and run in sort of a native mode that the original TSOP has to be functional in the first place. Is this a correct assumption?

If so then it seems like modding a previously *functional* box will have the full capabilities of the original, including XBL functionality, whereas modding a broken box where the TSOP is damaged, will result in being most capabilities of the original except XBL. Is this true?

I appreciate the help here!

i think it will be playable... but not for xbox live.... insted buy a working xbox and we can softmod it with sid 4 or 4.5 dual boot=retail and even put a bigger hd and you will never get ban...

i have a xbox with 200gb hd and i always played xbox for about 6months ... then i ported to xbox 360 . and it takes m$ about 6 hrs to ban you...

the way this softmod works... if you press open tray to turn it on.. it will load ms dash and the circle led will be green... meaning safe for xbox live.

power it on normaly and unleash x loads... ( or w/e dash you choose) and the circle led will be red indicating the softmod is active...

also its scritped so noobs wont make mistakes .... such as shadowcing your C drive so you wont break the mod ... and you will also be enforced to press create ms back up and create eeprom back up ...

this is the safe scripthing i was telling you about.. theirs more but i feel this is enough...

and actually softmods will get you going about less then 10 mins... you just need a game $5-15 and a way of transfering between pc and xbox ... action replay kit ... $30... so as you see its also alot cheaper....
