I always make my own cables but you should at least own a tester like this one

Cables that are moved around alot can fail at any time, causing much frustation.
I hope this has been usefull information

Nice post, full of info and links, great job, I forgot that the cable wires can break inside from getting moved around alot especially when your moving them around fairly rough or kink them or pinch them or even pulling on the cable can cause it to break inside. _________________

@all
Thanks for checking to make sure I'm using a crossover cable. Yes, the cable is definitely a crossover cable (I bought it at Wal-Mart a year ago or so). I also just verified that it works by connecting two PCs with it.
@chiribomb
Yes, my OS is XP Pro SP2. I tried the setup you suggested and it still didn't work . when I ran IP config, it displays the following:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection
Media State ........... : Media Disconnected
@gus
the xbox port doesn't light up when the cable is plugged in.
I've got a spare wireless router laying around so if we want to try going that route with regular patch cables I'm open to that as well.... Anything to get this working! Thanks again for all of you taking the time to work on this!

It should light up if you were even using a crossover cable, sounds as if your ethernet port is not functioning, in other words, burnt out. _________________

You basically have to replace the ICS PHY chip. _________________

Good grief!! There is no way that I would be able to solder that itty bitty little chip! I've had bad experiences with soldering in the past.... Do I have any other options perchance? Would replacing the whole motherboard work? But, if I did that, I imagine that it would cost a lot . Or, if anyone knows someone in Omaha, NE who does these kind of repairs.... Thanks for your continuing help!

I am confused at your ipconfig statement, it should read
Ethernet adapter Local area connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix.:
IP Address.................................:192.168.0.5 or what ever you set you pc at
Subbnet Mask.............................:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway..........................:192.168.0.3 if this is what the xbox ip is
If it doesn't look like this then go to the start button choose settings network connection wizard and setup a network between pc and xbox then use the New connection wizard.
The key is to establish the connection and to verify using the ping command
in the dos Command Prompt window.
type in ping 192.168.0.3 and it should ping 4 times with a 1ms return of 4 packets send and recieved then you know for sure that the nic in the pc and the nic in the xbox are working correctly.

yep so its ur nic on the back of the xbox... damn mine is pratically dieing too.. i dont even know why , i have surge protectors and all taht stuff.. oh well back to you..
prety much their isnt anything else u can do about it... well u can try a diffrent type of cable or a diffrenset setup but i doubt this will fix ur issue... as if u dont get any green then ur gone ....
HOWEVER : when u plug it to the back of the xbox.. move the cable around when its pluged to the xbox until it hits green ... IF it hits green tamper moving it around with it until u get a siginal... thats what i do lol a nd it workes... buts its a bit of a bitch... but as long as it works so then its agrred try plugin it and move it around until u get green now make sure its pluged on both the pc and xbox... _________________ Xbox 360 Premium edition

Do I have to restart the Xbox each time I try plugging it in, or just fire it up and keep plugging/unplugging the cable?? Thanks!

no u dont have to restart it ... just plug the cable and while its pluged move the cable side to side or right to left back n fourth and until u see the green ligh turn on... if it dont then u need to change it ... if it does go on even for a bit then it means it stil works... but its just damage for soem reason... _________________ Xbox 360 Premium edition

cyber86 did you read my post about pinging the xbox.
IF you are not activily sending requests to the xbox you will not see the green light, just because you plug in a cable it will not do anything.
Look at the status of the local area connection, it should be a little icon at the bottom right of the screen that look like two little computers, when you put your mouse pointer on it should say:
Local area connection
Speed:100.0 Mps
Status: Connected
this will show that both boxes are linked then ping it in the command prompt window, until you do this you are getting off track, do not worry about the xbox nic, they rarely fail and it is more than likely the cable pins.
Until you do this you are just agonizing over something that may not be the problem.
