hey my names mark and i just joined...so yes im a noob in here lol. anyway i have 2 xbox's. ones new and i modded it with linux installer. and ive been putting games on the harddrive but it runs out of space quickly lol. my old xbox doesnt have a dvd drive anymore and it gives me this error and blinks red, orange, and green or something. i was wondering if i could hook the two together somehow and use the older one as just storage. or maybe make it so the older one can just play games off the harddrive like my new one. the only problem is that i dont know how to make the old one work without the dvd drive. do i need to buy any cords? ive seen xbox's with two hard drives but no dvd drive work. ive read about clusters, and a bunch of other stuff lol but none of it has helped me figure this out. plz help me out! \m/mark\m/
Hi Mark,
Welcome to the HQ. Seems like you've run into a few problems. First of all, lemmie address the "linking" issue. No, you cannot link the xboxes together and run stuff off one on the main (like you would with a network server). This would require a chip a whole lot of other work I don't think you'd be willing to do (or spend the money on.)
Xbox two is not far from slavaging at all. All you need to do is replace the DVD Rom. You can use DVD-ROM 1 in Xbox 2 to do the required work (softmodding and such) but when you go back to DVD ROM 2, it will give you the same error. You cannot boot an Xbox without the DVD rom unless you have a chip.
Chipping brings up a whole new subject. A lot of people want to save money and go cheap. But if you're a modding n00b, then the older chips are no the way to go. There's just a shit load of work that goes into installing them (like the AladdinXT). But they all in the end (for the most part) end up doing the same thing.
The xboxes you've seen with more than one HDD and no DVD drive all have chips. Which brings me back to money. It's a tough situation for most of us modders, hense why some of the "n00bs" are starting with softmods. They're cheap, and now, with the SID series, they're easy as hell. But they're also High risk. If you delete the wrong XBE, you're screwed.
I don't reccomend going cheap with chips. I tried that once, and only got a massive headache. I then sprung and got the Xecuter 2.6CE. An amazing chip, and really quite versatile. Only paid about 65 bucks for the chip and all the nessecary hardware (not counting Soldering Iron, Solder, and extras like that).
Most of us (the admins) offer install services. And I offer a "tech support" kind of option, via Yahoo and SKype for the VIP members. I prefer skype because it's voice based, and easier to get the point accross.
We are a family here, and definitely are based on trying our best to help people out. So please, feel free to ask more questions. That's what we're here for. I'm, for now, going to bring another admin in on this subject to better help you out...

Well for one what colors is the eject button blinking? all colors isnt possible if its malfunctioning it blinks one color or 2 colors or it stays a solid color.
Need to know if your have audio and video and if theres an error code that shows up on the screen?
Do you have the retail harddrive (original) in the xboxes or are they upgraded?
If you remove the dvd drive in a softmoded xbox it wont work after you do, as AngelosDracul said you need a chip to do that.
In order to ftp xbox to xbox you need a crossover cable or play systemlink games, thats all you can really acomplish by connecting the 2 xboxes.
And the reason you probably run out of space fast is that your harddrives are retail.
Using an xbox for storage is pretty much pointless you can acctually use a computer for storage by simply ftping to your xbox and moving game files or emulators on or off of the xbox, which your going to have to do some reading on that.
We here at xbox hq have a very good tutorials database to find out how to accompish some things, and it dont hurt to ask around about it either.
I hope we can help you get the other xbox up and running and uptodate with all the latest mods.
I hope we have been of some help to you and we will be looking to diagnose your problematic xbox.

both of my xbox's are totally retail. but one is softmodded with linux installer. the other as far as i know the only thing wrong with it is that theres no dvd drive. at the moment all i really want to do is get the 2nd box up and running. i know how to ftp fine. i use FlashFXP. but the thing i dont understand is "why doesnt an xbox work without a dvd drive?" a computer works when its dvd drive is removed! and the xbox is pretty much a computer, isnt it? my 16 year old brother wants the 2nd xbox lol and he keeps asking me to fix it. i was wondering if i picked up a normal computer dvd rom at a second hand store or something could it replace the missing drive or do i have to buy one of those thompson replacement drives? either way id like it to be cheap. when the 2nd is fixed id like to softmod that one as well. btw how much does a bigger harddrive cost (for the 1st xbox...that works lol)??? and how outdated is UnleashX because thats the softmod i use? thanks \m/mark\m/

You can only replace an Xbox DVD drive with another xbox dvd drive as far as I'm aware, as it does not have a standard power connection, etc.
A larger harddrive will cost whatever you spend on the drive. If you can find a $10 drive that locks, then your fine. You can't just drop in any hard drive though, it has to be prepped with xboxhdm or a chipped xbox, and it has to be lockable(unless your only going to be using a chip). To check whether a specific drive is known to be lockable, check the harddrive database on this site("HardDrives" at the top of the web page). If you buy a drive and it turns out to be lockable, but is not in the database, submit it to people in the future can use that information.
UnleashX is still being developed, so its very fresh. I beleive a new release was available a couple days ago. _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

The only PC DVD drive that can be "popped into the xbox" is the Samsung 616t DVD-ROM. But it requires some Heavy modifications (soldering, jumpering, replacing the power adapter, and a good flash with the 605b firmware). I have the drive, ordered it off E-Bay. Best buy to save my POS box.
The reason an Xbox cannot run without the DVD drive is because that's how Microsoft designed it. They were trying to keep it from being modded. We all see how well that went. That's the simplest way I can answer that.
If you're not willing to pay the 125 that www.divineo.com wants, or the 85 I paid on E-bay (that was a year ago, I'm sure the price has gone down), then sure, you could pick up a thompson drive. But it will fail you. When you go with modding your xbox, cheap is not the way to go, really that simple. especially for n00bs.
The HDD question was answered correctly. Stick with Seagate or Maxtor, as they have the most "lockable" drives. READ UP before you try and upgrade with a softmod. One wrong move and you've turned a nice big HDD into a paperweight.
If you're willing, you could send the box to one of the admins like myself. Most of us offer install and upgrade services, and only charge a nominal fee, plus parts to restore or mod the box.
Unleash X is not the softmod. It's just one of many dashboards that DJB and Nknave have chosen to use to write the installer. As long as you're using one of the newer SIDs you're fine. Personally, I'd stick with SID 4.0 to keep the box secure from accidental deletion of any important parts.
