More then likely you are talking about a SOFTMOD..
A softmod is a software hack that is loaded onto your xbox hdd to replace existing files.. Then you should be able to play backups, install media center and much more.
A softmod is a alternate method then a modchip.
I always suggest a modchip because it is easy to recover from any errors.
With a softmod the end result is the same but if yuo receive a error there is alot more to it.
