I would like too introduce myself to the site and complement you folks on the amount of useful information I have found here. The level of enthusiasm and competence is impressive.
My interest lies in updating the dashboard, emulators, and hdd space that I currently have. I have a softmodded xbox that utilizes the phoenix loader. Unfortunately, someone else did the original softmod, and I am unaware of what version the phoenix bios is and what exact exploit was used. If there is a way of figuring that out I would like to know. Otherwise this is the information that I do have:
Xbox version 1.0 (pretty sure)
Exo X version 1.8.3752
Bios is retail 4034
My rig is currently working well, but there is a nagging problem. If the power is disconnected for more than about 20 min, I have to reboot the loader by connecting it to a high speed internet connection and letting it cycle for minutes or hours. I have been told that this is a problem with the version of phoenix that I have. I would like to fix this but it is currently beyond me.
I get a sense from all that I have read that having a mod chip instead of a soft mod makes a lot of these operations much easier. I have been tempted to just by a chip, flash the bios, and use AID on a new hard drive in hopes of leaving the softmod baggage behind. However, I don't know if the softmod exploit would reject to this coup.
Given my position are there any recommendations?

Well, if you DO decide on getting a chip, you could Format the hard drive, re-install the retail Xbox operating files (located in pirrup's signature [the write of the hotswap tutorial]) and lock it with a backed up eeprom.bin.
using the hotswap method (there's a tut in the sofmod general discussion forum)
Hope i helped,

If I am understanding this correctly, the procedure mentioned above would revert my xbox back to its retail state and allow me to start over with a mod chip? In the hotswap tutorial, there was no mention of an eeprom.bin. Is this to flash my retail eeprom back to its original state. I ask because I have wondered if the softmod method hacks the retail bios.
Thanks for the reply.

The eeprom.bin file is supposed to be included in /eeprom so that the liux utilities can use it to generate the proper locking password for the new drive. If this file is missing you will not be able to relock the new one in such a way that it can be used in the xbox.
If your just looking at fixing the PBL though, this is my recommendation, as I have had to do this to several xboxs myself:
-FTP into the xbox
-Delete all of C:
-Upload files from Pirrups signature
-Reboot
-install SID4.5 files(you could also FTP these into place before delete c:, thereby eliminating the need for a memory card/etc)
-Load exploit game
-Re-do the softmod using the new and improved method
This should be all you need to do, and if all your apps are saved to E: then you don't lose them either. _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

He He, don't worry Eddie I don't have my xbox in pieces all over my living room floor already. The hotswap seems like it would be useful if my xbox was not booting at all. I have a couple of noob questions that may make all of this gel. First, do I only need the eeprom backup if I am going to swap out my retail drive? Second, can i revert my softmod to the retail state by simply replacing the files in C: with the MSDASH? Then I could resoftmod or chipmod at my discretion.
Regards
Bob

The eeprom file is good to have backed up just in case something happens so you can restore if you need to.
Yeah, replacing the files on C: to take it back to retail, though all the other files on your E: will be inaccessable. If you have nothing you need to save, I would recommend wiping the E: as well. _________________ Hotswap|HDD Upgrade|X3 Guide

Many thanks Greven. The tutorial information is making more sense and I feel a little better about just updating the softmod.
Cheers
