Posted: Mon Mar 13, 2006 6:26 am Post subject: Q about step in HD install
I used the 'Mod an Xbox in 10 minutes' guide to softmod my xbox V1.0. I have the second guide from the same person - 'installing a larger HD in your softmodded xbox' I've done everything - I have all files backed up and I made the .iso file (and burned it to disc.) Here is where I'm a little confused: The guide reads:
Once the CD has burned, turn off your system and disconnect your current hard-drives. Set the jumper on the hard-drive you intend to use in the Xbox to Single Master. Connect this hard-drive. Go into your BIOS and make sure the boot order sets to boot from the CD drive before the hard-drive. Reboot your computer (if necessary), insert the burned CD into your CD drive and it should boot into the Xbox Maker and Recovery Tool program. (The guide is at http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml
How do I 'go into my BIOS and make sure the boot order sets to boot from the CD drive'? This may be a stupid question but I'm new and don't want to f it all up! Thanks in advance!

It might not be F2 for him. It's DEL for me. Just watch your system screen when your PC boots (before you hear any "beep" or anything). When the RAMcheck runs, you should see a few options. Some are lucky to press a certain key and choose what device you boot from. If not, choose "Setup" in whatever form it chooses before the system boots.
Once in your BIOS setup, look for something under "Advanced options" or "boot order" and set it to boot from CD-ROM (or the name of your device if your MoBo recognizes the firmware) and IDE-0 second. Save and Exit, then let the system boot. You're good to go. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

I decided to try it today...
Now I can't get my systems to talk w/ FTP...
What am I doing wrong?
I set up connection to 192.168.0.4 which is what my xbox is set to. Do they need to be different (like 192.168.0.2?)
Seems like a simple roadblock but I would still love help!

Still no luck. I got them to communicate for a short while. Then I disconnected it all and tried again...w/no luck. I think there are 2 different things I have to set up so that the computer recognized/goes to the xbox. LAN settings and IP address. Any suggestions?

I have Evolution X V. 3935 (hopefully you know what that means.) When I turn on the xbox w/tray open, a different menu with blue screen and choices window on the right comes on - I describe it that way for lack of word to call it. In system settings there, I found: Unleash X V 0.37.1218A Build 543.
My Desktop is a Dell XPS 400.
I'm DL'ing your suggested FTP today and will try in about 2 hours, 10am Colorado time.
Sorry to burden you w/all of this, it really is pretty straight forward and I shouldn't be having these prob's...THANKS for all your help!
By the way, I found my eeprom in C:Backup.

Cool. Using FlashFXP I extracted all the files nec. to my PC. I shut the PC down and disconnected the HD. Problem: the cables on the HD in my PC don't match the input on my new HD (they're small, one w/ total blue wire, one w/ red, orange, two black and 1 white.) I need a cable like the wide gray type. I've been told I need a PCI ATA Controller Card. Is this right or should I just take back my new HD and exchange it (but then it may not plug into my xbox...) Sad, isn't it!

The eeprom, the Only one I could find was in C:Backup. It does appear to be the right one. Again, it's the ONLY eeprom.bin in my xbox.
Update: I got everything figured out, I think. I got the cable for my new HD and am connecting straight to the motherboard to complete the setup. Again, from what everyone else around here said, I did it all correctly. My problem w/FTP was that my IP address on my PC was set to be the same as the box. I needed to change the last # to one digit off (ex. 192.168.0.4 for box and 192.168.0.3 for the pc.) After I figured that out, it was cake.
So from this point, this morning I plan on finishing the installation and will write in if I have Q's -- I'll also check in when I have finished the process just to let you know. I do appreciate all the advice and help -- I feel I learned a lot through this whole thing and I'm not as much of a newbie anymore...
Thanks Again,
M in Colorado.

The HDD cable I have to connect my PC w/ my new HD isn't the right size (the port on the PC is slightly smaller.) The only other port I can possibly see that may work is the one w/the current disc drive connected to it. I've contacted my friend at the local computer store and I'm taking my new HD and all to them to configure my HD since it appears as though I don't have the capability here to do it myself. Even though it's $85/hr., this seems to be the safest/easiest way to get things done.

IDE ports are all the same size. Are you sure it wasn't the floppy cable you were handling? IDE cables are conneted to CD drives and hdd's. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS
