Hey everyone! I am having some trouble that I can't seem to find any helpful information on from the internet. I am a newbie to a lot of this but love learning new things when it comes to computers, xboxs, and stuff like that. So please let me know anything that you think about my problem. I have a softmodded xbox and I recently purchased a cross-over cable to do my FTP'ing. I am hoping that my cross-over cable can serve two purposes for me. One is the FTP for my modded box. The second is this: I bought a new PC a couple of months ago. I have a laptop that has a program called Cool Edit Pro 2 on it. I no longer have the disc with the software on it to download it onto my new PC and my laptop doesn't have a CD burner for me to burn a new disc. I need to have the Cool Edit on my PC. Is there a way to transfer this program from my laptop to my PC? Both the PC and Laptop have ethernet ports, but I am not able to connect both to the internet at the same time. I tried connecting both with my cross-over cable and I can hear them communicating back and forth, but can't seem to access any information from the remote computer (my laptop). Both computers run on WindowsXP. If you have any solutions, would you be so kind to let me know? Thanks guys! You help me out a lot and I appreciate all of it!

well in order to network your computers you have to set up a network and share folders too, and with xp it has a network setup wizard you can use. Ill do a follow up post with some screen shots to help you out. just explaining it, to some one dont help them out especially if they havent done this before. _________________

first you go into control panels and select network connections, then you goto set up home or small office network, then you should get the network setup wizard. Im going to do this in a few posts so i dont get a string of pics, continued next post.

Then you follow the wizard depending on your network you can have. Select it accordingly to your setup.

then you will have a few more things to do which is name the network and so on and at the end when its done just choose to continue, no need to make a disk or anything your just setting up a network. Now you have to turn on some file sharing in order to access files on your computers. You go into my computer and select your harddrive by right clicking on it and go to sharing and security.

hey hellblazer,
Well I finally made it back to my project and I did exactly what you said. Both of my computers are possessing the same network names and workgroups. Only now, I can't figure out how to access the other's files. I have a cross-over cable attached to both computers. Do I need to be connected to the internet to share files? The reason I ask is because I only have a cable modem, not a router or hub, to plug both into the internet at the same time. Any help would be appreciated. I am getting balder by the minute because I am pulling out all of my hair. Thanks guys!

what you need to do is go into my network places to see your computers shared folders and drives and you click the drive you want to get into and you should beable to move them over to the other computer. _________________

So just for my own sanity, I don't need to be connected to the internet when I am trying to transfer files? It seems when I click into one of the folders, for instance...Shared Documents...all I see are the documents within the computer I am typing on, not my laptop. I named everything the same on both computers. That's correct, right?

You dont need to be connected to the net, and you may need to change the name of one computer so you can tell which one your getting the files from LOL. You can right click on the hd and goto sharing and security and allow everything on that harddrive to be shared, well non system files unless you set permissions up for that too. _________________
