I heard that sometimes you have to connect to pc the first time a dash is installed so that some file deleting/transfering can be done.

is it enough if I just set the ip and gateway and DNS and it will automatically detect it?.

well once you install the softmod, it automatically detects the ip and then you can sign on using your ftp program with the username and password as xbox. You dont need the gateway and DNS. Just turn off the static IP and you'll be good to go.
