You don't need it for what you're doing. You have the DVD ide and power cable unplugged? What happens when you swap to computer ide cable? _________________ XBOX V1.4

Harddirve.
It's about getting the timing right, might take a few tries. _________________

Ok, when you're doing the newest version of the hotswap, you don't need to worry about timing. Hense why you unplug the DVDROM. Follow this step by step:
1. Hook up your xbox near your computer. You don't need to worry about it being hooked up to a TV, just make sure the AV cables are plugged in the back of the box.
2. Shut down your PC and unplug your HDD (you have your disc in the CDROM drive, right?)
3. Power on your computer and press space when the bios is loading to freeze it where it is.
4. Turn on your xbox (with DVD ROM unplugged, power and IDE cable).
5. Wait for the LED to start flashing Red and Green. The HDD is now unlocked iin the xbox.
6. Unplug the IDE cable from the back of the Xbox HDD. Plug in your PC"s IDE cable to the back of the Xbox Hard Drive. LEAVE THE POWER CABLES ALONE!
7. Press space on your keyboard to continue the booting process and allow the computer to boot from the CD ROM.
8. Follow the rest of the instructions in the Hotswap tutorial.
Timing is no longer an issue with this method. As long as you unplug the xbox hard drive AFTER the xbox starts flashing Red and Green. When you're done, shut everything down, hook everything back up the way it's supposed to be and you're gold. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

Error 12, you have to be quick and swap when it starts to flash. The undefined mode could be your pc. _________________ XBOX V1.4

Make sure your freezing your bios boot up before it looks for for HDD, and YES you must be quick abot switching cable and hitting the space bar to continue your pc boot up........ you will get it......... these guys want let you down trust me.......... ALSO you may need to try different computer and I believe your computer needs to have the disk in DVD plater not CD.

If you're unplugging the DVDROM, no you do not, because once the error loads, the HDD is unlocked, and you're good to go. I waited 5 minutes before I transferred cables, and it still went.

no, as long as he's running a PC, he should be fine, and as long as your computer doesn't show a splash screen (Dell, E-machines, etc...) and you can see your bios recognize the IDE devices, you're fine.

If he burned XBHDM to CD (which I hope he did, because if he's only got his Save files and the C drive, there's no way it should be over 700 megs) it can boot off of either DVD ROM or CDROM, whatever one he tells the computer to look for first. This must be changed in the BIOS, unless your mobo supports a "boot menu", which lets you select the boot device on the fly (I have to press F8 on the BIOS screen).
Some PC Motherboards need to have the power being pulled to a device when it tries to read. I left my computer hard drive's power plug in the computer's hard drive, but left the IDE cable out of the drive.
As far as the xbox Hard drive, LEAVE THE XBOX HARD DRIVE POWER PLUG IN THE XBOX HARD DRIVE THE WHOLE TIME. The power must never leave the xbox hard drive.
Try those tips, as long as you're not booting with a MAC you should be good . _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
