Greetings,
Using SID 4.5, I got as far as backing up the eeprom, but then failed at "Create MS backup". The error message was "FOUND EXISTING SOFTMOD". I check the E drive and found only 2 folders, TDATA and UDATA.
To correct this problem I delete the eeprom backup in E:\UDATA\21585554\000000000000\backup. Then re-try creating MS backup, and still got the same "FOUND EXISTING SOFTMOD" error.
Now I am stuck because without an MS backup, I can't proceed to install a softmod.
My environment
1. My box is version 1.0, K 1.00.4034.01, NTSC.
2. I use AUF to run SID 4.5.
3. E drive only has 2 folders, TDATA and UDATA
3. I won't be using XBL.
Please please help ...

when you get that error when trying to backup ms dash, is the fact you either had an existing backup, or you still got some folders left of an old softmod.
1.- download ms dash from anywhere, and make sure it's versoin 5960.
2.- boot SID 4.5 and fix your network settings to your liking to ftp ms dash files.
3.- ftp ms dash to; E:\backup\MS\ (where xboxdash.xbe goes)
4.- steps to install softmod using SID 4.5 are.
-backup eeprom
-skip ms backup (you already have it, since you ftp'd)
-install softmod>boot>dash
EDIT: Quick message. this error indicates files on C:\ not on E:\. _________________ Xbox v1.1

Took me a few days to read up and learn (how to get 5960, networking, ftp, etc.), I finally felt that I might actually know what I am doing, and did as you suggested, and it works great. Thanks again nknave.
Now I have to read up some more on what a modded box can do for me
