Without going into painful detail, we tried to soft mod unsuccessfully and when frustrated tried to restore. The end result is that we have no dashboard, can not boot up/play games, and get error 16. I have read many posts, and hotswap sounded like the solution. I run 1.9 and all seems OK (it apparently executes all command). When I type in xboxhd to get the second set of options I get an error that says, "This script assumes /dev/hda is the device to be used for creating or rescuing an xbox harddrive no disk drive found on dev/hda (primary master)! Shotdown, connect a drive and reboot." Next line is "root@xbox-HDM:/2"
Appreciate any help on this, our xbox is useless right now.

Being new, we of course did not back up anything. All we have is what is on the XBOX harddrive that we can not get to w/ no dash board, etc. It seemed like I followed Pirrup's hotswap tutorial to the letter and do not know why I am getting this error. I appreciate any help in getting my xbox working again.

I check my pc hd and it is set to master and plugged into the primary. After I unplug the dvdrom IDE and unplug dvd power it boots to error 7 with the usual page of foreign languages.
Except for the error I get when I type xboxhd at the second login, everything seems OK, I think. When I type xboxhd, I still have the cable running from my pc hd to the xbox mb, right? From the tutorial, sounds like I don't plug the cable back into my xbox hd until after everything is done? Appreciate any help as I am still struggling.

I've only had to hotswap twice, so I'm no expert, but if the xbox HDD jumper is set to master, and you have your pc's cd/dvd drive on your secondary IDE and the xbox HDD on the primary ide channel, and you don't get pages of text about seek errors, you shuold be fine. Is that what you have?

I have tried on 2 different computers (HP & Dell). I believe I have the jumper settings right and plugged into the primary on the mb. Could be I am just misreading what appears to be simple instructions in pirrup's tutorial. Please be patient with my ignorance, but as I understand the tutorial, you switch the cable from the xbox hd to the pc hd and then run the xboxhdm program, right? When you get to the 2d login, the cables stay the same (i.e. cable from xbox mb hooked to pc hd, right? Could any of this be related to putting the ms dash in the wrong linux folder and running it in the wrong place? I appreciate your time and help.

Just to expand on what dajackal said, when you start your xbox you have the xbox IDE cable connected to the xbox HDD. Then, you disconnect the xbox IDE cable from the xbox HDD and connect the IDE cable from the primary IDE slot on your MB to the xbox hdd. I think your doing it backwards.
To clarify what I said(I'm often very confusing):
1. have xbox ide connected to xbox hdd and xbox power connected to xbox hdd
2. boot the xbox and remove just the ide cable at the appropriate time
3. boot your computer to the xboxhd screen asking if you want to use xboxhd, locking/unlock, etc(the main screen)
4. connect an ide cable from your primary MB slot to the now (hopefully)unlocked xbox hdd
5. restore
Does that make more sense?
