I just softmodded a second Xbox using the Splinter Cell exploit from "Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v2.0.Xbox-Hq.rar" from "the usual places" (looking here, there are newer versions that maybe I should have used). It went well; I followed all the directions, including making backups (which I have). I was able to boot the Evox dash normally and the softmod menu with the tray out. I was also able to play a backed-up game from a DVD-R.
Then I tried one more thing... I tried to install XBMC from XBMC-CVS_2006-01-18-T3CH.rar as my dashboard. I copied default.xbe over top of C:\xboxdash.xbe, but I must've done something wrong, as now when I boot I get a multi-language "Your Xbox requires service" message, with error code 13. I believe this is indicating that I screwed up the dash XBE.
I thought that I could simply boot with the eject button and keep the tray out and get to the softmod menu (from which I could perform a restore). However, this simply results in the same error as a boot with the power button. I tried booting with the burned DVD-R in, and got an error code 14 that time.
What should my next step be? Am I going to have to crack open this Xbox? I *do* have a zip file of my E:\Backup directory, and I also have a separate X-Chip modded Xbox. I'd prefer to keep things as simple as possible at this point, though, so I'm asking for advice. Thanks in advance.

I'm happy to say I recovered. I saw another post mentioned "install softmod again". Therefore, I tried booting Splinter Cell, and lo and behold, it worked. I re-ran the exploit, restored by backup (nice feature, btw), and whammo, I'm back in business.
So obviously, I'm missing part of how this is supposed to work. I obviously don't understand how my softmodded Xbox is different from my chipped Xbox. How should I have installed XBMC as my dash to have prevented this error? Apparently I shouldn't touch C:\xboxdash.xbe?
(Believe it or not, I'm actually a reasonably smart guy, a Linux kernel hacker by profession. But I obviously lack a considerable amount of knowledge in this area, so I'm looking for enlightenment...)
