I bought a MCE system, along with an Extender package, from Dell this December. I unwisely chose to get the Dimension B310 system - it's really quiet, and it was cheaper than it's big brother the E510 - but the software that came with it was really old. The XP MCE had none of the updates or rollups installed, and the MCX software with the Xbox is version 1. As a result, I cannot play some video which contains CGMS-A information on the extender. Examples are movies recorded from the Encore movie channel.

I have found a few links which explain that the solution is to upgrade the MCX software to version 1.01. In fact, Microsoft released this upgrade in January of 2005 as far as I can tell. However, the link in their announcement leads to a not-found web page. The current information on Microsoft's site says you may download the upgrade from XBox Live. I don't have an XBox Live account, and besides the post which detail using the upgrade to fix my particular problem indicate that the CD is needed (for instance, you need to delete the old MCX entry in the XBox's Memory menu and then re-install the MCX from the (new) CD.)

I called Microsoft twice on this and both time was told that the only way to obtain this upgrade was through XBox Live. I really balk at paying for an account I won't use just to get a software upgrade which may or may not fix my problem. Does anyone here have any ideas?
