I am experienced in soft modding the xbox as I have done two prior units with the larger hd upgrade.
It has been awile since I attempted another but I was half sucessful while trying again.
I softmodded the original hard drive. No problem. I backed up the C & E drives to my PC. Also backed up the EEProm and transfered that to the PC as well.
I went to format a larger hard drive (80gig) using linux boot disc created with XBOXHDM. It created everything fine just like I have done things in the past.
Here is the problem, When I go to play a game from the DVD Drive, it loads, plays intro video, but when you start a game it hangs on the load. The same happens if you back up a game to the hard drive via DVD2XBOX. It hangs on the load screen.
If I pop the original hard drive in that has the first softmod, It plays games just fine.
To play it safe, I formatted the 80gig hard drive and started from scratch but still no luck...all the games get stuck loadiing.
I tried to back track to figure what went wrong but I can't figure it out. I didn't find anything specific in the forums. Any advanced installers have ideas to help remedy the situation?
Thanks

Ive had a similar problem myself at one time then I thought maybe I might try clearing the CACHE on the E drive and then the backed up games started to play. It only took 2 reformats of the xbox harddrive until I decided to try something else.

Thank you wise obi-wan. I cleared out the CACHE, UDATA, and TDATA and that did it. I cleared those files out of the master folder for which I create the Linux HDTool Disc as well.
Thanks again.
