hi, everyone,
sorry for repost here! i need help.
i got my xbox today from gamestop, and managed to softmod it, i have read lots of tutorials, and try to figure out every details in tutorials, but i still had lots of trouble to finish it, even now.
i have a softmod xbox borrowed from friend, it runs unleashx 0.38, i use it for convey the gamesave for softmod.
my first xbox comes from gamestop, it is k:5101,D:4920, then i downloaded SID(softmod installer deluxe) 3 to pc, ftp the installer(splinter cell) to softmod xbox, then save them to ms memory unit, then took it to the unmodded xbox, copy to hd, boot the orignal game to initial the unleashx v0.37,(i spent almost 6 hours to here, there are some experience could be shared), then backup is the first job as the tutorials keep mention(luckily i did it ), i sucessed in ftp into it, and fetch all files in c: and e: to my pc, and even sucessed in install softmod, but when it come to install the evox or unleashx dashboard, it not works, it show up error messages, seems cant unzip or read or write the related files, anyway, i stop by it just before the final install of dashboard, when i reboot, it appear error 13, it says have to call the customer service, but since i know there is a way to restore my ms backup, so i boot by splinter cell, enter the unleash, and restore my backup. i doubt why it just stop at the final stage, maybe the hd has prob, the model is produced by 2003.7., so i went gamestop change for another one, it is K:5838,D:5960, produced in 2005.02.
the same prob. happen to new machine, i even try SID 4(SID.4.0.NKnave.Edition),SlaYers_EvoX_Auto-Installer_v2.6_FINAL without luck, all stop at the install the dashboard.
i doubt if something troubles happen in process of pc->softmodded xbox->ms memory unit-> xbox, so i bought a AR with memory unit from bestbuy, unfortunately the momery unit seems clash while i use it for memory unit direct, after that, it can't be recognized by pc.
i hope someone come to help with it, it took all my weekend but in vain.
how should i do next step.........
what am i probably wrong during the install?
by the way, there are some points i haven't read from tutorial
1. some ftp program use anonymous as default even you do input the username and password, as it, you can't write into the xbox hd, the problem annoyed my almost one hour.
2. for a newbie, it is hard to add the installer into the right folder of xbox hd. i made lots of try, and i don't know how does the gamesave looks like, and copy them correctly in first place.

Well, if I'm catching everything correctly, it seems to me like yor main problem is your friend's Xbox. The save file he has may be bad. So, go download the save file from the site, transfer it to your mem card. (Note! You cannot use a Microsoft brand Mem card with the Action Replay hardware/software. WIndows recognizes the hub differently and there's all kinds of problems there)
After you have the save file on your mem card, follow these steps:
1. Delete any SPlinterCell saves on your HDD
2. Copy the SID files over to the HDD from the Memory Card (From here on out, I'll assume you're using SID3.11 Final)
3. Boot Splintercell, and load the game save (Start game, checkpoints, linux)
4. Once the dash loads, backup your MS Dash (the last Xbox you got has the proper MS dash on it, no worries about updating it)
5. Don't worry about copying the Files to your computer again (you've done it once, it takes forever, just relax )
6. Once you have the MS Dashboard backed up, go to "File Manager" and open up the C drive. Highlight all the files by pressing X a few times, press start, and select "Delete Selected Files"
7. Once this is done, Exit the filemanager (DO NOT REBOOT YET!!!!!) and go to "install Softmod".
8. Click on Singleboot ---> Boot C Drive Dashboard
9. Allow it to Install, then go back to the main menu and click on "Patch MSDashboard"
10. Finally, click on "Install (dashboard of your choice goes here)"
11. Eject the disc, power down, what have you, and when you power back up, you should see the UnleashX Menu in all it's blue and green glory!
I know it seems long, but I can softmod an Xbox in about 3-5 minutes when I have all the tools accessable. Currently, I have one mem card with SID3.11 and another mem card with SID4. Once you have your box modded, you can load up AID and start going crazy installing your apps and such.

thanks for the reply, my gamesave is downloaded from this site, just use my friend's modded xbox for transfer, i have no AR. btw, i do buy myself a AR, but it not work for me, i follow everystep to install AR, but as the last step, AR plug in, it appear ' the usb device fail to enumerate.....', all my 3 days vacation come to an end with frustration, i return it. i try all the steps again..........., i am trying the advices above, will reply with result, anyway, thanks ...............
the following is my xbox info and steps to softmod, ...not work yet...
my xbox is K:5838, D:5960
i softmod with softmod installer deluxe 4, SID4, via Splinter cell.
i am sucessfully to boot the unleashx, and ftp into xbox, backup the eeprom, c:, e:
now the steps i experiencing is
1. creat epprom backup...........(ok)
2. creat ms backup...................(ok)
3. install softmod
there are 4 options, i choose the ' single boot from NTSC xboxes'
then there are 2 options for dashboard, i select the ' install evolutionX as dash'
then the message ' this install will only install if you have your eeprom and c backup, test will now run'
after check, it show ' eeprom back found, no other softmodes installed, continue install? '
my answer is YES, then it starts copy files.......( i can't see the process bar vary......seems files not written sucessfully)
after awhile, it shows ' softmod successfully installed, you virtural eeprom must be patched, after eeprom, now you'll boot to installer' ( i can't figure out what it means)
i push ok button, then
it shows ' the install will now boot to patching system, after it completed, please turn off xbox, and power back on without gamedisc to finish the install.'
and then it starts on patching, ......maybe 30 seconds after,
it shows ' patching completely...' and install jump to mean menu.
as its instruction, i select the shut off the system,
then take out the gamedisc, power xbox on,
then............
it show the error 13 message..........call the customer service...........
luckily, i have ms backup on hd, so i again boot to unleashX with the gamedisc and gamesave, and select the restore ms backup...........
i spends all the day to try different installer, and SID4 is the newest one but not work either ( in SID3, there are 2 separate options for install softmod, dashboard, install softmod seems ok, but during installing dashboard, it keep showing error.......)
please help!......give me any hints to work on it........or any sucessful modded this machine with the same K, D, please give me the advice.........appreciate.......

i do as u said, i fellow as ...

3. Boot Splintercell, and load the game save (Start game, checkpoints, linux) (YES, i did it, and it initial the unleashX dash)
4. Once the dash loads, backup your MS Dash (the last Xbox you got has the proper MS dash on it, no worries about updating it) (YES, I BACKUP eeprom first, then back the ms dash, then i ftp from my pc, get all files in c: and e:, then burn them into cdr at once.)
5. Don't worry about copying the Files to your computer again (you've done it once, it takes forever, just relax Very Happy) (YES, Thanks for remind)
6. Once you have the MS Dashboard backed up, go to "File Manager" and open up the C drive. Highlight all the files by pressing X a few times, press start, and select "Delete Selected Files" (YES, I delete all folders and files in c:, all clear)
7. Once this is done, Exit the filemanager (DO NOT REBOOT YET!!!!!) and go to "install Softmod". (YES, I did it)

Click on Singleboot ---> Boot C Drive Dashboard ( A little bit discrepancy, i use SID4, i have no option to select which driver to install, but it install, everything seems ok, but i found the process bar not move, but i also notice the capacity of c, show in the left-below corner, keep decreasing)
9. Allow it to Install, then go back to the main menu and click on "Patch MSDashboard" (YES, it seems patching system automatically in SID4)
10. Finally, click on "Install (dashboard of your choice goes here)" (This step move up in SID4, require just after install softmod, i choose install the evolutionX)
11. Eject the disc, power down, what have you, and when you power back up, you should see the UnleashX Menu in all it's blue and green glory! (NO, I DO HOPE SO, but it show up with error 13, i have seen it since 2005.12.31)
now i doubt if i didn't make the gamesave correctly, i download from bt, the filename is SID.4.0.NKnave.Edition.Xbox-Hq.rar, i unzipped the SID4.NK.Launcher.zipSID4.NK.Loader.SplinterCell.NTSC.zip, and then unzipped both, both have udata folder, and sub-folder there, after that, i ftp to my friends' softmodded xbox( i am sure i delete saves related to splinter cell), and transfer both to memory unit, then follows by what i described above.........
please give any hints to deal with it, hope luck come down on the last night of vacation.......

hi,
it is me agian, a desperate softmodder.
i try SID3, come with AID 2.11 Final,
in SID3 folder, there are 2 splinter-cell-related zip files, SID3-splinter cell part 1 and part 2, i unzip both, then ftp to softmodded xbox, in my pc, i upload the udata folder to e:, then i reboot the softmodded xbox, check the gamesaves, i got two SID3 gamesaves, transfer both to my xbox-hd via the ms memory unit, and make sure no any save on the hd, then i boot the splinter cell, enter the unleashX 0.37.
1. backup ms dash
2. delete all files in c:
3. install softmod, it is ok.
4. i am not sure i should patch first or install hacked dashboard first. i select to patch ms dash, it appear error, ' batch process failed, the last item was , action: rename'
5. i have no choice to install evolutionx instead, but it appear error again, no error message at all.....
6, it seems not work, so i restore my ms backup for safety.........
that's what i did.......please give me hints.............

the only thing i can think of is the memory device your using is corrupted, and the xboxdash.xbe file that loads the softmod is also corrupt by it.
I suggest you boot SID 4, then correct settings for your FTP, and ftp the gamesave files from PC to Xbox, in correct folders.
when you unzip both gamesaves, you'll get the following.
UDATA\21585554\
UDATA\game???
and you'll ftp those 2 folders to E:\UDATA\ and select reboot on the SID 4 menu, then backup eeprom and I assume MS Dash is already backed up, so just install softmod after eeprom backup, and see if that works.
Have you ever had any softmod working for your xbox before, or is this your first attempt? _________________ Xbox v1.1

thanks for viewing, replying... i use AR to convey the SC gamesaves to HD, and it works finally, i seems the problem is happen while installer try to create the virtual image c, and the files not successfully copied to where it have to be, and maybe SID4 wrongly report that " softmod is sucessfully complete..................'' even it doesn't .
btw, i am doubt that some tutorials say making the installer via softmodded xbox is convinent or easier, it involves more hardware and software issues, it works indeed i thought, but may not recommended as first priority for newbie.
for AR, i experienced hardship also, my pcs and laptop all report with ' the usb device fail to enumerate' , and refuse to run AR program , finally, one of my pc give way to my persistence, but it runs as a snail, hard to connect to the serve, hard to drag and drop the saves and response slowly.
it may caused by my machines, but who knows?
hope my experience helpful for others,
btw, please kindly drop a line for info for unleashx dashboard, i am trying install new HD, and figure out more functions unleashed by softmod xbox.
