Ok, I just walked to the shops, in the fucking rain. They had Datastream at Big W, a brand that I think was called BukDisc DVD-Rs at EB Games, TDK at Tandy and some brand I can't remember the name of at Sanity. All of them were high priced and low quality. I guess I'm getting the ones at TheTechGeek.com. _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

roo465; I will (edit: damn that smiley looks evil.)
Enigma516; Nope, I'll check it out now.
edit: oh, Staples is an American shop, isn't it? Well, either way, I hope they can deliver to Australia.
edit: dammit! "For now however, the Web site at Staples.com can offer delivery only to addresses within the United States, and Staples.ca can offer delivery only to addresses within Canada. " _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

VERY good news. I just rung the local K-Mart and they have Verbatim DVD-Rs! I'm going down there this afternoon! The only thing I forgot to ask (hell I asked about the brand, how many there were, if they had cases) was how slow I could burn them. I'm on the website now and I'll post a link if I can get one.
edit: haha, I'm a sad bastard. I'm reading the catalog on their site because I can't be bothered going out to the letterbox.
edit: ok, I'm going there at about 6 PM (about 7 hours from now) so I'll tell you how the burn goes tonight! I will be burning Farcry instincts for my mate, Jake. He owns the original copy and he wants a backup (because his little brother is crazy and destroys shiny things. such as CDs.). We'll be using it because we both know it doesn't preload and we wanna see if we can go fast enough to beat the loading and go through the ground in a Humvee. should be a challenge (or I could jump off a cliff, that'll make me go plenty fast ). _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

Ok, here's my plan. go to KMart, Buy 1 DVD-R, go to The Games Wizards, buy 1 DVD-R. Test them both. If neither work, go to TheTechGeek.com and buy this and this. The enclosure is just because I really need more space on my laptop... _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

hmm....looks like I'm adding Verbatim 8x DVD-Rs to "the list". They burn perfectly, but the xbox can't recognise them. Just incase it WAS the ISO, I'm going to remake it and burn another. If that doesn't work, I'm off to buy a sword. then I'm going to verbatim HQ.
edit: just burnt another, still doesn't work. Now I am pissed off. _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

Somethings not right, you can't be going through this many media brands and not get 1 that your xbox will read. _________________

I know, it's very wierd, but original games still work and so do my old backups, so I guess it's bad luck. Or something.
edit: wait a second.... I was burning the old ones at 6x, but I've only tried 4x with the new DVD-Rs... ok, I'm burning shadow again at 6x.

Ok, I burned Far Cry again and there is NO LAG AT ALL. Loading's a little slow, but that doesn't really matter. What this tells me is that the lag wasn't caused by burning too fast, just using shitty DVD-Rs. Thanks for the help Funkydopeloven, Forahobby, Shark2th, Enigma516 and roo465. Also Enigma, congrats on your recent 1000th post!
edit: spoke too soon. I was playing normally and all of a sudden, my second SMG dissappeared. so I started using the right one. it made the "out of ammo" sound though it was clearly firing. a few seconds later, BAM, dirty disc error. Maybe I should just get a bigger HDD, though because I softmodded, I'd prefer not to. too much hassle. Are there any Aussie Xbox-hq'ers that'll upgrade a softmodded xbox's HDD? maybe even install a modchip too?
hmm...are there any guides on how to go from softmod to modchip? I'll upgrade the HDD myself if there are. _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

I'd recommend check out the Xenium Ice or spice if 1.6 with the solderless mount. They have tutorials with pictures there too.

Thanks for the info Shark2th, but I just have one more question. Do you know if the "Spider" solderless modchip is any good? the only reason I ask is because I was pretty sure it came with a pre-flashed BIOS. I have flashed a BIOS before (on a PC), but I messed up. I was lucky it was socketable (still doesn't work though...)
edit: oh hell, I just noticed that I'd have to buy some torx drivers to even open my xbox...
anyway, I'm gathering that to upgrade from softmod to modchip wouldn't require uninstalling the softmod, right? just plug in the chip, flash it's BIOS and it should all be fine? I mean, I know that when I upgrade the HDD, I'm meant to back up C: and E:, but what if I just did C Or will EvoX just automatically work with the chip?
edit: screw it. one of my mates has a modded Xbox. We can use the guide for installing a bigger hard drive with another Xbox. _________________ My Aki EvoX skin!

Lots of questions but I think I've got you covered. Not sure of spider but Xenium has a bios preinstalled. I know the next question... one that plays backups? No. One that instantly allows you to ftp and do other functions. It's compatible with all dashboards. I've used Evox, Avalaunch and currently XBMC (because I can see the HQ news headlines from the Xbox ). You can start with ANY pc hdd and mod it. Now, if you plan on using the M$ dash too, or XBL, then you need to get a hdd that locks.
Get chip, download and burn AID.
Install chip, obtain a bios that allows the use of backup disks and the like, before you know it, you're reading headline HQ news. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th
