Higher-end brand names tend to work well when using CD media in an XBOX. So Sony, Phillips, Fuji, along those lines; and always remember to use CD-RW if you're using CD media at all. If your Thompson doesn't read the disc, though, don't necessarily blame it on a bad burn, as Thompson's are notorious for being flaky, or even dying outright.
Honestly your best bet is, money permitting, get yourself a good DVD multi-format burner on newegg or somewhere, and get some blank DVD's. Also, looking for another DVD drive for the XBOX wouldn't be a bad idea either. Again, money permitting. eBay has some listings for all sorts of drives, including stock Samsung 605's as well as modified 616-T's for reasonable rates, and since XBOX DVD drives are a universal part, it yould be a good purchase to make no matter what. I might even look into that myself soon enough, since the 616-T's read all media formats. As for the Thompson's though, I hear they're more likely to read from a DVD+R than a DVD-R. Samsung 605's and Phillips drives can both read DVD-R's, which is the more popular format, and therefore less expensive of the two media types to buy. I used to use a Thompson, and I eventually had to POT-Tweak mine to get it to read a Memorex CD-RW, at which point I decided I wanted a new DVD drive even though the POT-tweaked Thompson works just fine. Right now, my POT-Tweaked Thompson's sitting in the bonnet of a friend's XBOX, because his Thompson died on him in the middle of a game of NWN.
Just to share with you, I use an NEC DVD+/-RW ND-3520A in my computer; paid $50 for it on newegg. I also use Maxell DVD-R discs, and I haven't had a problem yet. Also keep in mind that I no longer use a Thompson since I picked up a Phillips drive, and it's read every DVD-R I've ever burned at 8x. I haven't tried to burn at 16x yet, though I'm sure it'll read that, too. _________________ XBOX V 1.0 (softmod)

If you're looking to replace your dvd drive, I would contact Modgod. He usually has dvd drives. I got my Phillips from him. _________________

You know for the price some of these people charge online for drives, you would be better off spending another 40 on another xbox, probably outfitted with a nice Hitachi (I have two, used to hava a thompson.. It sucked.. IT WOULDN"T READ THROUGH CLEAR D-SKINS, I was like WTF?? ) and then pot tweaking your old xbox. This way if you have to you can swap out dvd drives, isn't hard, just leave the top unscrewed. The prices I am referred to are guys want almost 130 bucks for a damn drive. Its ridiculous.
Now.....giving him a hard act to follow (b/c I don't know what he charges sorry man.)
But contact modgod he shoud have some answers to a good drive and he is a reasonable guy so I hope his prices follow his personality. GO THEMODGOD!

You don't get an xbox for 40 bucks, you spend 40 MORE for a new xbox, b/c a drive might cost you 120 bucks. Got Me? _________________ XBOX v1.6

Or you could just flash some supported model of pc dvd drives and modify the power cord and your set. Don't ask where to get the hacked firmware for that the only one who knows is the s.s.m! What is s.s.m?
