I'll try to make it as short as possible...
I co-own a pawnshop and some guy came offering a XBox, it looked new, so I asked if it was modded and the guy said "Yes" with the latest modchip... good! does it has a HDD? "Yes" ... so we proceeded to test the unit, and it had UnleashX and booted a backup game on DVD. Everything look fine, so I offered and the guy accepted the arranged price.
I took my new XBox to my home and along the way I drop off at some friend's home and borrowed Halo2 and The Suffering.
I had a long night of shooting.
Now, straight to the problem... I started to invetigate about stuff that I could do with my "modded" xbox, and I downloaded AID, I ran it a few minutes ago on my Xbox and succesfully installed a bunch of emus to the x hard drive. Reset the Xbox and worked great... the I continued browsing and find something about "Region Free DVD Player" and I installed it, but a warning came up! "Note that this wont work on softmodded Xbox" then I said "WTF, Mine is a hard modded one!" so I choose to install. after a minute, the xbox freezed and when I turned of and on again, a "Call Costumer Service" in many languages appeared with a "14" in the top left corner of the screen. Now I can no longer boot the xbox, only when I insert an Original Game.
What happened? any ideas? How can I fix that?
I'll appreciate any help.

Sounds like you have corrupted the SOFTMOD files which allows you to boot backup games and hacked dashboard like UNLEASHX..
If you had a modchip you could still boot Auto Installer Deluxe for sure and then reinstall everything but it sounds to me like you have a softmod!
So, more then likely you will need to reinstall the SOFTMOD using a ORIGINAL XBOX GAME and a memory card..
btw.. If you CAN NOT boot ORIGINAL GAMES then you would have to either install a MODCHIP or do pirrups HOTSWAP tutorial for softmods to get your xbox back working..
Well, I'm at work right now... but I'll print everything out to do it overnight...
I would like to add a question...
I remeber seeing in some of the partitions on my xbox some directory called "Copy of C" and it has some files on it and also some folders.
If I connect my X's HDD into my PC as a slave and copy the contents of that directory to the root of what should be "C:" in the xbox, will it work again? --- it's not that I don't want to follow pirrups's tut, I'm asking because I don't have internet at home and I need as many options to fix it as I can get. I don't want to spend another night of frustration.!!
Adding to connecting the X's HDD as a slave, I also have a USB to IDE adapter (it's actually the case of an old CD-RW drive that I dismanteled) and I also have Windows XP and Fedora Core 4 on this PC I'm on right now (is a laptop, so I can take it home)... I added this to give you a sight of the tools I have, so it can be easier to think of more solutions.
Thanks for all your help, really!

Ok, I've readed the tut several times, I want to be sure what will I do...
For what I see the idea is let the xbox "open" the hdd and then unplug it and plug it into my pc so my pc will boot from the cd I've just created and work with X's hdd? right?
If I'm right, do I have to get IDE AutoDetection on my PC's BIOS on right?
I'm also unable to get DVDDecrypter, is there any other program I could use?
Please excuse all this questions, I'm completely new in this area... altough I'm very familiar to PCs, the XBox is something new to me.
Thanks
Dumb question : With this process, my saves will be deleted?

DVDDecrypter is just the easiest to use. You can burn with nero or any other app that will burn iso's. Since you hdd is already unlocked you can hook it straight up to you pc and lock it with the eeprom.bin that you backed up. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

Ok, I've spent 3 hours straight trying to do the hotswap thing with no satisfactory results... worse, I ended up with another error code, this time is error 16, I already checked what is this about.
While doing the hotswap stuff I noted that the Microsoft logo that pirrup mentioned only flashes for a split second and then the error code comes up, so I tryed many times, counting seconds to help me do it in the right moment and the drive NEVER unlocked. xboxhd always found that the drive was locked, and also sometimes the HD was detected as a slave drive instead of master (altough I was conecting it in the right port).
At this point I'm frustrated, I was so close to smash the damn thing ... but the only guilt can be set uppon me. So I'm asking for two things :
1) Is there anything else that I could do to get my x working again (please don't tell me about that savegame and splinter cell thing since I'm not going to spend in a game I don't like and a memory card I don't really need, i preffer a modchip)
2) If the only way left is a modchip, which one would you recommend?
Thanks for your help!
PD. I have a 20GB HDD that I'm not using, I already formatted with xboxhd without hassle, but obviously can't work it on X. Any use for this drive?

The Xenium Ice is very easy to work with and is of good quality. You can get it with the solderless install if you're not savvy with soldering. If you have a v1.6 box you'll have to get the SP.Ice package. There's a tutorial on how to ID your box. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

Ok, after hours of analysing the power on process of X, I finally made it to the point of success. I've restored my X with MS Dash.
So, I have a few things to add.
Pirrup : I learned some things that could add up to your helpfull tutorial and maybe make it even more helpfull. If you agree, just tell me and I'll do the work.
Everyone else : I used xboxhd to fix my problem, If I copy some other Dash stuff to the C folder inside Linux folder, can I softmod my X again? because right now, I have a non softmoded xbox with the original dashboard running. OR if theres another way to softmod my Xbox using the hotswap trick, please point me in that direction.
Thanks! I really learned a lot in these days.

feel free to give sugestions .
but what i can't understand is how you unlocked the hd so it could be used by xbhdm and how you locked it again without an eeprom backup.

Ok, here's how I came up with this.
The Xbox gave me and error 16, this error is about the RTC and stuff... but mainly is because he cannot find what he's looking for on the HDD. If the Xbox is telling me that, is because he IS reading the HDD, and that means that while he's reading the HDD the drive is unlocked. The problem was that he was doing the operation very fast, so, I started to count off and became familiar with the sounds that the HDD heads were doing, so I came to a point where I exactly catched the drive when it was reading. (CAUTION : there's a diference between the reading sound and the start up sound, if you disconnect the drive in the startup process it will be recognized as a slave drive, or not be recognized at all by the PC) that is how I've done it, my computer recognized the drive, I booted with the xboxhd cd and did a C drive reconstruction (because I didn't want to loose my save games).
I'll post later a more detailed process so it could be of any help to anybody else.
Thanks a lot for everything!
