OK, let's have some opinions here, which out of the two is better.

When deciding, please keep in mind if possible the compatibility factors for both codecs, and the quality produced by both of them.

So, to start the ball rolling, I think XviD is better. It might be a little hard to configure at first but once you get the hang of it you can produce very high quality video.

I must agree XVid is good but if you have any experience downloading xvids you always find errors if you resume your downloads..

With divx it seems to have a more stable key frames and doesnot get errors as much..

I VOTE DIVX...

I've been reading the specs for the Xbmp and there is no mention of Xvid.
If you can give it a try and let us know, that would be great.

I was talking to forahobby today when he came around, and he says it should be possible to play XviD on the Xbox, and I'd believe him when it comes to Xbox stuff...

I would still have to vote DivX because of the support available for it and the number of people who actually use it. I have had really good success with it, but look forward to the maturing of XviD in the future, because it has potential.

Just a update.

The latest release of the Xbox Media Player supports the following:
.divx 5.0 (all divx), .wmv .xvid, .wma, .mp3..

You can easily stream from your pc with a network lead to your xbox..

You can setup a share directory and your xbox will cache files from the network and play on your xbox.. Very easy to setup too..

As it stands now, my vote falls on the side of divx. Although Xvid is of higher quality. I've also had a harder time downloading quality xvids. Secondly, there is a lot more support for dvix right now.

Hey forahobby,
where can I pick up a new copy of Xbox media player?

Quality XviD's are easy to find these days, and I think more release groups are tending to use it rather than DivX.

I tried out DivX 5.1 about a month ago and wasn't really that impressed with encoding time, XviD is still way faster and I believe better picture quality. Ofcourse it's maybe more compatible, but that's for the fact that DivX is commercial also.

Anyways, I'm not saying who's right or wrong, it's personal preference, but this topic is definately becoming interesting. Smile
