Good news people, thought I'd better insert this update at the start of this thread as it is pretty long. I got the xbox working with xchip plugged in.
Thanks to tylord in the easybuy2000 forum I tracked down the xchip_v1.3-1.6box_only.bin from xbins, 'load raw' through x-control, 'write all' to xchip via usb and bob's your uncle! Works like a dream, it's a 4mb bios and completely rewrites the table in x-control when you 'load raw' and then 'write all' to the chip, simple as that. bit of fun getting into xbins but worth it and you might learn something along the way.
Thanks for all your help fellas, good luck and I will stay in touch as I've still a lot to learn. See ya's (original post starting below)

My L-Frame LED goes off when I plug in the X-chip and I get a frag, I thought it was from the wrong bios being in the X-chip ( I have a 1.6 x-box) when I first turned it on (would have been nice to have been told not to turn the x-box on until I had loaded the correct bios, in the installation guide, which was my only reference at that time). I since completely removed the adapter and X-chip and all seems well, now I can sleep better while I try to find out what was wrong Very Happy
I checked and rechecked the connections by checking all the LED's were on, I did have trouble here and it wasn't hard to loose one or two LED's when touching the adapter, which may have been the problem? but I plugged and unplugged the X-chip several times with all the LED's staying on without the X-chip plugged in so seemed like the wire connections were pretty good, spread the pins with a 5 cent piece, loosened the securing screw and moved the adapter around to make sure it was seated properly in the LPC port.
Does anyone know where I should check next if the L-Frame light goes out with the X-chip installed?......Thanks.
Oh, and the bios I loaded is the flashbios_v303-1, is this the right one, is there a better one for a 1.6 x-box?

flashbios is a cromwell bios (legal bios).. It will not let you do anything except boot XBOX LINUX or flash another bios..

Maybe try using the EVOX M8 bios for XBOX 1.6's..
Any other suggestions guys?? I havent played with a XCHIP but you can bet your ass its gonna be the M8 you need to flash onto it.

When you modchip is shipped it will normally come with a cromwell bios of some sort.. (LINUX).. All you need to do is either flash then install or install and then boot your xbox till it shows the FLASH SCREEN and then you install the CD/DVD with a bios on it.

You could also possibly use a programmer.

hope that helps get you started.. It could be just a bad bios causing your xbox to frag.

use the usb port on your xchip you can get the x-chip programming software and hook your computer upto it and program it that way. Evox M8 is a good bios to start with, now depending on the size of your harddrive your going to have to choose what bios your going to need.

Now since your xbox is a 1.6 your going to need the evox M8_16.BIN for harddrives under say 120 gig, if its more than that your going to need the evox M8Plus bios which is M8plus_16.BIN.

The good thing about the X-chip is that theres 4MB (mega bytes) of Flash Memory you can flash to.

Thanks for your advice fellas, sounds like there is hope yet. I will try the evox M8_16.BIN. Once I get this I load it via the usb port and X-Control right? then set it to boot, will that work? and where can I find this bios, thanks again. I will let you know what happens.

Post subject: Trouble creating iso image

Another quick newbie question I'm sure, I've looked but can't find anything on it.
I've downloaded AID 2.11 off BT, took a while, converted the files to rar with WINRAR started AID 2 Updater tool and got the AID2 iso file, and the 1g dummy rar file and created the new iso but when it gets to the end of creating the new iso it comes up with a 'invalid name' error, I tried 3 times with shorter and shorter names and without numbers?
Hope you can help.......Thanks

rename the iso by typing in just AID.ISO and then try burning

an update...basically still getting frag.
I redid the wireless adapter, even used a GOOD LIGHT and long nose pliers to make sure all the spring wires are home, of which I am sure of now. I know that this is where some of my problems came from before but all the leds are on and stable now.
I reflashed my xchip from xcontrol via usb after restoring the original bios just in case with the evox m8 v1.6 bios from the AID2 program. I loaded the 1Mb bios into bank B, it is the only bios on the chip besides the original and it is set to BOOT.
My xbox works prefectly with the xchip unplugged but frags as soon as I plug it in, is there anything besides the wrong bios that could cause this.
I even soldered the xchip to the 5V power supply so I am 100% certain that the xchip has enough power.
Also still couldn't update the iso but just burnt the original, not a real issue at the moment, just need to stop fraging first.
Thanks....and my L-frame light still goes out with the xchip plugged in???

If the xchip can load the bios does that mean it is 100% ok or can there be something wrong with it even though it loads the bios?. Can the xchip itself be damaged from booting the wrong bios?
I took some voltage measurements as a matter of interest:
with xchip unplugged | plugged in
lpc #2 0.3Vdc | 0.7Vdc
lpc #6 5.01Vdc | 5.04Vdc
lad0 2.001Vdc | 2.301Vdc
lad1 1.993Vdc | 2.302Vdc
lad2 1.999Vdc | 2.300Vdc
lad3 2.005Vdc | 2.302Vdc
L-Frame 3.32Vdc | 218mV
5V onchip 4.96Vdc | 4.94Vdc
(soldered)
Red led is ON
Each time xbox starts up during frag the L-Frame led lights up first momentarily but goes off when the other leds come on and I get that 218mV reading on the gold wire.
As a side note I put the xbox back together with the ide cable above the xchip, while on the adapter, and all were squashed together when I screwed the case together, xbox booted in normal mode but without sound, ide cable should obviously go under the xchip, the ide cable could interfere with the chip in this position, possibly touching one of the gold wires while under the chip or move the chip itself.
I've posted this and other stuff on the "easybuy2000.com" forum as they should be helping me but no-one has replied in there to anyone since the 8th of this month. I have plenty of patience but it would be nice to know if anyone will actually look at my problem. I would like to stick with xchip as I'm sure it's a great chip once it's working......anyway sorry, enough complaining.

Well it looks like it to me, in the xchip_1.6_quickguide it says that booting the wrong bios can make the chip itself UNUSABLE, well if that is the case I'm just glad it's the chip and not the xbox that was damaged, I'll just have to save for another chip, not going to give up after what I've learnt, didn't have to learn quite this way but that's life, still hoping for a miracle but my hopes are dieing. Thanks for all your help fellows, see you in a little while with better news I hope Smile. It had better be dead if I buy a new one !!
