How much will this cost? Nothing!
Now, if they want to enjoy full-time, full-access multiplayer gaming action this will require a paid subscription just like today. Consider that Xbox 360 owners can get online at the standard level decribed above. There will be many who will want to upgrade. This presents a tremendous opportunity for our retail partners to drive more Xbox Live subscription sales.
The Xbox Live Marketplace
The Xbox Live Marketplace will provide a one-stop shop for consumers to download new game trailers, demos, episodic content, new game levels, maps, weapons, vehicles, skins, and other types of new content on demand. The Xbox Live Marketplace is accessible to everyone who plugs a broadband cable into the back of Xbox 360 and creates an Xbox Live account. Just like today, content will be both free and premium. Premium content is content that you purchase.
The way an Xbox Live member purchases content in the Xbox Live Marketplace is by using Points. We will be offering Points Cards at retail and therefore all retailers are given the opportunity to drive revenue and sales around the Points Card.
The Xbox Live Marketplace enables users to personalize and extend their gaming experience, while simultaneously providing a valuable tool for publishers and partners to promote their brands and titles via demos and trailers. Studies show gamers want to try by trial and see games in action. Ultimately, by providing access to demos and trailers via Xbox Live, they will need to go back to retail to purchase the full games. Another way for our valued retailers to drive revenue.
Current Xbox Live Subscribers
A current Xbox Live subscription grants you membership to Xbox Live on both consoles. You can only access the service using a profile/gamertag through one of the consoles at a time though.
Game Compatibility on Xbox Live
You can play any backward compatible Xbox Live games against someone who owns that same game on an Xbox. So, purely as an example, you might pop in your Halo 2 game in the Xbox 360 and connect to your friends playing Halo 2 on their Xbox units.
Note that the Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top selling Xbox games. Look for more details on compatibility as we draw closer to the launch.
Credit Card Requirement
One of the top concerns and barriers to Xbox Live access today is the credit card requirement. Future Xbox Live gamers will no longer be required to provide credit card information when creating their account!"
