So I have had a V1.0 since they came out. I did a xcuter and a giant SSD. I also put in a much better/bigger clock cap.. It has very low hours and has been very happy until just recently.
It was hooked up composite mostly in the last 4 years. But I went over to component HD. I used to do HD on this all the time. It still had the setting > Video > 720/1080 enabled.. But no matter what i do all I get is 480P. I got new OG Xbox HD component cables. Same thing. Tried out a few TVs, same issue. Ive tried cleaning and examining the video connector, its fine. I measured the mode selection with the cable connected at the pins on the PCB. Those look right.
I noticed when measuring things tho that one of the mode sensing pins showed a 2.8Mohm value to ground. The other 2 were 10K. I followed those out to the PIC16LC63A chip. This has 3 IO pins with pull ups it seems looking at the datasheet.. I would think all 3 mode select pins would measure the same, but they do not.
SO.. I figured somehow the chip had been zapped on that pin and so the XBox could no longer sense the HD cable.
I ordered up a new MB. This board had exactly the same issue and the same high resistance on the mode select pin..
SO.. Cant be the same issue on both right ? No way right ?
Maybe I am missing something stupid ?
I now have one of these coming wens.. This cable FOR SURE does HD.. AND HDMI.. And Digital sound..

Are you sure it is only outputting 480p in all circumstances ie. for both games and dashboard? If you have access to the MS dash check with the video settings there rather than your modded dashboard.
If 480p/720p/1080i are all shown as enabled in the video settings then you should be getting HD resolution when using the dash.
But remember most Xbox games only support 480p and true WS support is far from universal. There are a few original games which support 720p and I think only one or two that support 1080i.
However there is a long term project to give more games true WS and 720p support but they're still a limited number and often require a RAM upgrade which is no simple job to do.
If you've enabled 720p and or 1080i you'd see it on the dashboard. 720p is the highest recommended resolution even then. 1080i makes navigation of the dashboard noticeably slow and jerky for most uses.
