I have an xbox v1.6 and Im having video problems that seem to be hardware related so its a bin job but I read a while back that if you unlock a HDD you can use it in another xbox and just have to lock it and all its data and games would be usable with out the need to FTP everything across.... is this true and how would it be done using chimp?

If true would I unlock the HDD using LpartX/FatX (chimp 2.6.1.Cool and unlock the HDD on its own with the DVD drive, meaning only having the HDD and DVD connected with no HDD swapping then transplant the HDD into the other xbox by using chimp again but this time using the swap method using two HDD's and lock it for it to work or is there somthing im missing?

I thought about it a bit more and would this way be doable:? remove HDD from 1st xbox and connect it into 2nd xbox using a Y splitter for power, use chimp with FatX and unlock the locked HDD then lock it with the motherboard setting?? I left out the steps for removing DVD cable etc. to shorten this post.

As I said in your other thread this is most likely an inherent problem due to the v1.6 Xcalibur video processor and certainly not a cause to bin the Xbox.

I'm guessing you came to the conclusion it was a hardware failure issue because the same emulators display OK on another Xbox you own.

If you really want to swap the HDD to another Xbox then backup the eeprom to PC as a safety net if not already done and then look for the most recent version of Chimp261812.

It has been updated by the same guy I mentioned in the other thread, Rocky5, so that you can lock either slave or master from an imported eeprom. The included Readme has details about that.

If it were me I'd clone the existing HDD to a new one using Chimp261812 and then lock that to the other Xbox. Unlocking the master HDD and re-locking it to the other I would not recommend.

Alternatively install a new bigger HDD to the other machine using Chimp, if the existing HDD is too small, and then FTP the wanted contents from the v1.6 direct or via a PC.

Whatever you do don't trash the v1.6 because it probably isn't in the least faulty.

You are going about this all wrong. What you want to use is Config Magic

Heres the step by step.

Good XBOX
Use Config magic to dump the eeprom FTP it to your PC

Bad XBOX
Boot it up and FTP over the eeprom from the good XBOX

Now boot up Config Magic choose Unlock HDD once thats done pick Lock With EEPROM and browse for the eeprom from the good XBOX. Lock it whack that HDD in the good XBOX all done

SPPV

The advice and method is not wrong at all. Chimp is actually just as good for this. ConfigMagic is simply an, older, alternative tool for doing exactly the same thing.

The point I was making is that the problem isn't a hardware fault it is almost certainly the v1.6 480p display issue described. No need to unlock/relock the HDD unless the OP really wants to swap the whole thing into the other Xbox.

Except that Chimp requires more work, requires hotswap and unhooking of a DVD drive etc. No point doing things the hard way if you dont have to

Thanks all but I ended up unlocking the V1.6 HDD and putting it in another xbox and then locking it and all is good now, Chimp was what I used and now I have a V1.6 motherboard as a spare or for an interesting wall piece.

Its still good for Xbox games even those that need the 480p fix.

But I sort of agree that given the choice of a Xbox with the Xcalibur, Focus or Conexant video processor I'd choose one with a Conexant every time.

My experience with the Focus is limited to one machine but going on that I'd actually prefer the Xcalibur to that.

The v1.4 Focus fitted Xbox is the only one out of the eight working Xboxes I've owned that has required significantly different TV picture settings for best results. I dislike it for that reason even more than the v1.6 Xcalibur and its display 'quirks'.

There are two "advantages" to the Focus based XBOX over the Xcalibur

1) It can be TSOPed
2) We have the encoder regs for Focus and Connexant so can do video tweaks for those XBOXs via kernel patching that we cant with 1.6. Like getting it to display 1024x768 or using VGA

Obtain Chimp 261812

Follow the set of instructions on the /r/originalxbox wiki:

Lock HDD for Use in Another Xbox

Guess I could just post them here too, I wrote them up:

Step-by-step Instructions to use Chimp 261812 to Lock HDD for another Xbox

1. Install Chimp 261812 to your Xbox's E partition (e.g., E:\Apps\Chimp\).
Extract the files from the Chimp-master.zip file
Upload the contents of E partition\Chimp -- folder and all -- to E:\Apps on your Xbox.

2. Obtain copy of the EEPROM.BIN file from the Xbox you want to install the current HDD into.
3. Rename the file from EEPROM.BIN to eeprom.bin -- all lowercase. (IMPORTANT!)
4. Upload eeprom.bin to Y:\ on the HDD.
5. Start Chimp 261812 via your replacement dashboards Applications menu -- Chimp Loader.
The power ring LED will be flashing Green while Chimp is running.

6. Use this set of selections / button presses:
Press (A) when prompted, "Please press Enter to activate this console."

From now on, Press the (A) button after using the D-pad to highlight each line item:
  • 3 TSOP/Chipped Xbox
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • 5 Other options
  • 4 Advanced Features
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • 4 Master drive options
  • 1 Lock drive
  • 3 From Xbox HD Y:\eeprom.bin
  • Yes
  • 5 Other options
  • 6 Shutdown.

The HDD is now locked to the destination Xbox. If you reboot your Xbox you will get an error 06 screen -- Kernel - cannot unlock hard drive -- as the HDD is no longer locked for this Xbox.

Install the HDD into the destination Xbox for which it is now locked.
