Posted: Fri May 10, 2013 6:00 pm Post subject: default.xbe_orig - File Question
When backing up games to the HDD with DVD2XBOX,
a "default.xbe_orig" - file is created, besides the normal "default.xbe" that launches the game.
My friends console does not create this "-_orig"; so it is not necessary for playing.
Now my questions(s):
Why does my xbox create this file?
I know one can simply delete it without srewing anything up since the "default.xbe" launches the game, but I just wonder why "default.xbe_orig" is even created...

^^ the "default.xbe_orig" is a backup file created by the xbox app "dvd2xbox"...if you use that app to install an original game to the console (or original backup 1/1 dump) the app creates that secondary xbe because the standard xbe is media patched for hdd loading!
the "default.xbe_orig" is a clean backup of the "default.xbe" before it was patched and installed, a good thing really as you can restore disk/directory structure by removing the "_orig" suffix from the filename!
............
the main reason for it is so you can restore the installed game back to true 1/1 retail dump by renaming the clean "_orig" file back to "default.xbe"...
UNLX can install a game from disk in the same way as "dvd2xbox" but it doesn't create a backup of the "default.xbe" (as far as i'm aware) it just patches it automatically! (or not if you set otherwise in dash settings)
have any troubles on games with a "default.xbe_orig" file present and the "default.xbe" isn't working, delete it and rename the "default.xbe_orig" back to "default.xbe" and that should cure your ailments!
(not counting games dumped by UNLX as it doesn't create a backup, just patches the original file) _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

That is a pretty cool thing.
Unfortunetly I backed up ~60 Games (not to say my whole collection) with UnleashX.
I also have these backups on my external HDD, just for the safety.
Do I have to worry that the default.xbeees (don't know the plural) go mad?
I actually don't want to replace all the UnleashX-backups with DVD2XBOX-backups; that would last forever! AGAIN

No. I use Ux (hate dvd2xbox) to do my backups and even though you dont get that original xbe backup I have NEVER had an issue with ripping a game with UX FTP to PC and burn to disc. It patches different than DVD2XBOX so that default.xbe will support via dvd and via hdd

^^ depends?
if you wanted to FTP the UNLX installed games from the console, you have to be aware of two things...
....
1, as they've been patched, they're you private collection, you can restore the games back to the partition they were previously installed on for them to work!
2, if you wanted to share said games, you'd have to stipulate how you installed it as sharing patched games have proved problematic to other users!
.............
about the "default.xbe_orig" games...
1, these are safe to share if it's xbe is backed up or unaltered!
i've many games i've dumped via "dvd2xbox" with their "default.xbe_orig" present!
2, when you FTP a game off the console that was installed by "dvd2xbox" you can delete the "default.xbe" and rename the "default.xbe_orig" back to "default.xbe" making it ready for backup disk writing/restoring the original directory structure!
......
consider this the next retail game you dump...
go into UNLX dash settings and disable the "auto-patch xbe" setting before you install a game! save option then install a game but don't run it (yet)
FTP it off the console first so it's clean (rebuild that directory back to XISO using cxboxtool, does FTP as well as rebuild in one move) then when you've installed/FTP'd whatever games from the console, go back into dash settings and re-enable "auto-patch xbe" (save option) to make the installed games playable!
remember, once the "default.xbe" is patched, it's more or less useless to the outside world (and may cause you future problems as a result of no unaltered fallback)
..................
if you plan on keeping an archive of your games (and want to share in the future) go with above!
if you're not arsed and it's just for your personal use! (recalling the paths the games were previously installed on) then do as you will!
UNLX will take care of all sides! _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

Only problem is for glue sniffing deficents lol. UX patch alows for HDD or DVD so unless you have an IQ of a bag of french fries its no worry. No offense dumb ass users (sorry just offended with my no offense HMMMM) UX approach is far superior to DVD2XBOX unless looking for a virgin xbe to do the unmod backup hack

Alrighty. Let me summarize it, I want to get it right.
Say you backed uo a game with DVD2XBOX.
The "default.xbe" is 'modified' so it will not be uni-compatible.
The "default.xbe_orig" is an untouched copy of the really ORIGINAL blank default.xbe, right?
And when you transfer the game to PC, what you want to do is delete the (patched, console-specific) default.xbe and rename default.xbe_orig to default.xbe which is "BLANK" then, so you can copy it to DVD or to other consoles as you please and without problems, right?
Please correct me if I got something wrong.
Thank you all for the anwers, this is very informative.

^^ YES! you've nailed it nicely!
to save the "delete/rename" steps, if you go with the UNLX bit i've mentioned above, it'll work the same way and cuts out some labor!
(and UNLX is better than dvd2xbox in functions)
...........
[edit]...

So basically (since I copied via UX but didn't pay attention on disabling auto-patchting the xbes) my backed up collection is now only for my personal use/for use with only this console, right?
If that is true, that is shit... ^^
Well I think I will 'update' my backups (not to say nuke and replace them)
so I can share 'em.
I don't like the thought that my xbox will quit duty sometimes and my backups on the PC are more or less useless for use with a second console/for burning DVDs because of the patched xbes.
Do you think this is the right decision?
(I just really want to be sure that my game backups on my computer are SAFE and CLEAN so I can share/burn them without any troubles.
BTW: I have another question regarding the best method for transfering files between xbox and PC, but I will open a new thread for this; this goes off-topic.

those game will work fine on other consoles. UX doesnt lock games to a console or any of that crap. You can FTP the game to your PC and burn it to disc and it will work fine. That isnt the case with DVD2XBOX, you will need to restore the default.xbe for dvd2xbox rips to work via disc

So you don't even have to disable "auto-patch xbe" when backing up games in UX as amiga said?
Well then I'm fine lol.
And for the use with DVD2XBOX (I have a secondary console from a friend on which several more games are backed up [but with DVD2XBOX]):
If I want to save them to my PC to be 'UnleashX-quality-backups' (neologism ftw) what I have to do is delete default.xbe and rename the default.xbe_orig to default.xbe, right?
And then I can copy it to a zillion HDDs and/or DVDs, correct?
Got so much to learn
EDIT: May said DVD2XBOX-copies be runned before copying to PC?
Does this screw anything up?

i won't go against the flow, just parting with my own experiences! (and not out to cause trouble or flame)
EVERY game i've dumped personally where the "auto-patch.xbe" was enabled...
1, the hash/CRC verification was out of whack, no longer a retail game as it was modified!
2, of all game dumped and patched, i could NEVER use them in a universal manner!
for all intents and purposes, i fucked the xbes rendering them useless!
............
SPPV knows the xbox back to front so his word is final, it is his area!
stick with him and you'll not go wrong!
(i'll be sticking with my own practice of dumping and sharing, not had any bad feedback yet, redump.org is where i go to compare all my retail dumps, if the hash is there and mine matches, i did something right!)
................
if the games you've dumped still work for you (after you've put them through the paces) good stuff!
.....
[edit] same goes for games dumped and patched i've ripped, couldn't use them!
any rom i've had from a trusted source DID work 101% and could've been dumped through UNLX with auto-patch setting enabled! (didn't verify hash at the time, no need if the games works fluid) _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

Got that.
And for the DVD2XBOX backups (which I will avoid in the future) I can go as said, right? Copy to PC rename xbes, blah... ->enjoy?
Thank you amiga and SPPV!
