I used my USB adapter I obtained from the smartxx v3 chip.
I wanted to try out softmodding.
I inserted my 1 Gb USB Thumb Drive and the xbox noticed it right away and formated it.
I then went to the USB drive memory slot within the memory folder and selected to erase the drives data. When I did this a window popped up.
"MEMORY UNIT 3A: The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged.
How do I restore my USB Drive now. When I plug the thumbdrive in the led light no longer flashes.
When I plug it into my computer the usb sound effect comes on, but it does not show up in my computer.
I have loaded up a windows xp recovery disk to see if I could format it, but it does not show up.
I think I just trashed a perfectly good USB thumbdrive.
The Hardware is still fine. _________________

You need to boot to the actual XBOX dash and go to memory it will say something along the lines drive was erased. Its now formatted FATX, which cannot be read/recognized by windows you need a special program like AR or Xplorer360 to be able to use it on a PC. One thing to always keep in mind is not all USB drives and SD cards will work with FATX it all depends on the memory controller. Even 2 USB that look the exact same can have different memory controllers. Ive tried using various programs on the XBOX to format but Ive always had issues unless I used the actual MS dash to do it. Your only hope to reformat the USB to be usable on a PC if Windows wont even recognize and say drive must be formated is a program called Partition Wizard Pro (its not free) it can recognize and reformat a FATX drive to FAT32 or NTFS or EXT2-4.
But all that aside you have a chipped Box so forget Softmod you dont need it or want it. Its a one or the other kind of thing. If youre looking for the kind of functionality you see in my softmod videos just pop in AID and do a 1 click install for modchips, it will install a dash, XBMC a bunch of other apps and if you choose can install emulators as well. Be sure to pick modchip though the way a softmod and modchip box are setup is different.

Well I have 6 xbox's total, 5 are modded with modchip. I had one xecuter
chip die on me when the switch panel cable was inserted into the chip the wrong way, it crossed the pins touching and fried the chip instantly upon turning the xbox on.
The 6th xbox now has to be soft modded. I just wanted to try it out .
The USB drive is toast. I formatted another thumbdrive and it worked this time, only because I did not select the memory menu in the xbox this time and select to erase the already formated thumbdrive.
I think the problem is that my drive now has no specific format.
I erased its ability to be formated.
The second USB was automatically formated and once it was changed to FATX I removed it and placed it in my pc.
This time my pc noticed the USB drive, even though it was formated in FATX.
The problem with my first attempt occured when taking an extra unneeded step that ended up corrupting my 1st Thumbdrive. _________________

No specific format doesnt matter, its no different than if you pull out a thumbdrive while being formated. Look at brand new HDD they come raw no format and they can still be used. Plain and simply Windows sucks ass for drive formating I never use it. Partition Wizard should work for you, Ive used it when Ive built drives that turned out not to be lockable and windows wont pick it up but partition wizard does.
Also since it was formated there would be no data to erase, boot MS dash and plug it in and see if it will reformat it. I would be willing to bet money the drive isnt toast and can be recovered. I use lots of SD cards in my work and they do get corrupted from time to time but MS dash or Partition Wizard has always fixed the problem

I could try partition wizard sure.
I'm telling you the honest truth, I know it won't work in the xbox, nor will it work in my computer.
I have it plugged in right now and the xbox does notice it, but like I said in previous post
Quote:
"MEMORY UNIT 3A: The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged".
This is what the xbox has been telling me. If only I could provide screenshots of the xbox.
I think the problem may consist of a missing driver.
I have been trying to update driver on the 2nd USB Thumbdrive with
xbreader.inf file I formated to use with Action Replay v.1.40 and I am getting this message when applying the hacked driver:
Quote:
The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software deriver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.
So I'm planning on running VMware Player and trying it on Windows XP x86.[/quote]

Good luck getting AR to work on X64 it was designed for X86 operating systems. Ive been working on editing AR for months now to get it to work on 64bit with no luck. The issue is normaly a X86 program has a comand line that tells it to install to program files x86 on a 64bit PC, but AR doesnt have this so it just installs to program files, so now you have an X86 program that the PC thinks is x64 which for obvious reason just doesnt work. Also with AR you dont need to hack any drivers you just add the device ID to the config file so it knows to install the Max Drive driver for that specific device.
Ive been fixing/modding XBOXs for around a decade now and Ive never been unable to recover a drive, USB or otherwise. When you get the damaged message its caused by 2 things. 1 the memory controller is not compatable, or 2 it attempted but was unable to format. The damaged message doesnt actualy mean the drive is damaged but rather thats the message an XBOX gives when it cant recognize a USB. The only reason why the message is what it is is because it wasnt designed for USB, it was designed to use pre formatted FATX mem cards so by default it thinks if it cant read a mem card it must be damaged. Im uploading a video now so you can see what I mean, in it I use an 8GB Sandisk USB that the XBOX says isnt functioning damaged and it works fine on my PC.

I understand from your point of view.
But, on this side the USB thumbdrive is no longer working with my pc nor my xbox.
Because of this I am only left with the option of a thirdparty software to get me out of this situation. Unless the USB shows up in File Manager of the xbox, which is something I have not yet tried.
USB's aren't always as reconizable as HDD's. _________________

Have you tried windows disk management, Ive had ones that half assed formated show up there as RAW and let me reformat as fat32. But youre right you do need third party software 90% of the time to recover a hookered drive or usb. I just dont like seeing people throw out/ right off stuff that can be fixed, but sometimes it is the cheaper route, since partition wizard is like 60 bucks

I know what you mean, electronics fail all the time and it feels like I've made an investment on the things I have boughten.
The 1 Gig drive cost me $5 when I bought it in 2008.
I might go up to the store I bought it from since it is a MICROCENTER brand with a 3 year warranty.
Thanks,

I used an old laptop running Windows XP x86 and used the 2nd attempted USB thumbdrive and this time I was able to update the driver out of my formated copy of xbreader.inf.
VMware Player would not recongnize any USB Mass Storage Devices in Device Manager, so I'd assume VMware Player will not work for this USB Modifier process.
Device Manager now lists the Thumbdrive as: USBIO controlled devices,
MaxDrive XBox
The other USB is garbage as far as I am concerned and it is not worth my time to research a way to fix it.
The USB drive would have been alright if I would have just taken it out after Msdash formated it to FATX. However, because I took the xtra step and decide to select erase after entering into the memory menu it is ruined. _________________
