I realize that this isnt really a case mod but whatever it could lead to one if it would work. And if this has been posted already then please show me the way to it. I was wondering if there was a way to take the power supply and make it external and jut have it connect in the back and have the the psu housed in just a generic box. like could some type of connector be fashioned with the wires from the mother board connector out to the power supply? because i think it would be a great way to make a slim line xbox or something along those lines.
Yeah, I suppose you could do something like that if you could find a decent plug to use. you could probably condense all the wires down to 7 wires which I think is one less the 360 but the 360 only really has 4 they just spread 12v and ground over 3 plugs each. you have 12v, 5v, 3.3, standby, power on, power ok, and ground. the only thing I would reccomend would be putting a little fan in the case you would build for the power supply since you would no longer have the xbox fan to help cool it. One problem slimming it you would have is where to put the hdd and dvd-drive since they pretty much sit right next to each other. But otherwise yeah it would be totaly possible. I actually built a converter from schematics I found online so I could use a ATX power supply from a computer and have it so the xbox would turn the power supply on and off when I turn the xbox on and off so it doesn't stay on all the time like most ATX mods

Well, if your power supply is going to be external, like the brick for the 360 remember to have some kind of cooling for it as well. For the connection, you actually need all wires reconnected as the board does use the trigger voltage and such, not to mention it would be much easier in a sense. Just look online for molex connectors and think about how to connect the power to the back of your modded case. An idea is to make a short jumper that connects to the board to the back case with a male plug at one end the female at the other which would be at the back. Then decide if you want to extend the wires from the power supply more and resolder the longer wires to the board and connect new plug. Heatshrink the wires together so it looks clean as well. There is many different colours for heatshrink now instead of just the black tube. There was a tut on here for the power supply mod from an atx - xbox conversion just have to find it again.
If you need any other ideas just drop a line.
Here are some good electronic companies to deal with
Mouser electronics and digikey - I have used both and will stand behind them.

yeah here is the schematic I used for the ATX converter http://home.arcor.de/h3d/atx2xbox.gif . It works quite well and fairly simply to throw together and cheap, I think I had like 5 bucks into the whole thing. all the part numbers are on the schematic if your interested.

Yeah, I guess that would work as long as you arent over powering the XBox itself. Just solder the correct joint's and I'm sure you should be fine, as long as you don't over power it. _________________
