So I will start with what my goal is. I want to use my old 1.6 xbox as a media player until I can figure out what I want to build for a full-blown HTPC, and figure out how to pay for it.
I have the XBMCID downloaded and I built a ISO according to the directions included with the download.
I dont really care about continuing to play games on the XBOX, or getting banned from Live... I just want to run XBMC as efficiently as I can... AND I want to be able to install a larger hard drive to rip DVDs. I have a WE1600BB which I have confirmed is lockable.
So, what I am wondering is, can I use the XBMCID to convert my Xbox into a media center device and replace the hard drive with a larger one? Some websites I have read seem to say that I need to do the softmod route with a copy of splinter cell and a action replay. Is that a better/worse/equal method to just using XBMCID?

Your box will need to be chipped or softmodded to even run XBMCID and if you keep up with the XBMC updates that come out you might want to go with a chip since it will be less head ache in the long run.

fitting a modchip is always the best solution.. If you can afford a modchip then look into softmodding.
