I remember seeing a post about changing a Bios so you could stop it from searching for a DVD drive in a box without a chip but I can't find it to save my soul. What I have is an extra board that I made a xbox to atx power converter for to use an atx power supply and have no case or dvd drive for it but want to make a custom case without a xbox dvd drive in it but as of now it wont start with out the dvd drive thats why I need to change it. Right now I have it in my other xbox's case so i can get it going and I have it softmoded using sid5 and I think I put unleashx on it. If i had a chip I would have to bother asking as there are tons of tuts on them but I have yet to find anything about flashing the onboard bios and was wondering if someone could help. thanks

If you have a broke disk drive you can gut it to trick the xbox in to booting.

Depending on the mobo version you might be able to TSOP it.

yea i have seen posts about just hooking up the main board out of a old drive to trick it to run but I would rather not do that but I could if I had to.
I think the the mobo version is 1.2 or 1.3 not sure which

Ok so I soldered the points like it said on that page but when it come to flashing it do I need to do it the way it says on that web page or is there a different way to do it on a box that is already softmodded, I can ftp to it no problem. I hope there is a different way because I do not have an original mechassualt only a platinum version I used the splinter cell or which ever other gamesave there is to hack it. Also you said you used the x-2 bios is that the cromwell bios or is it different and is there some place specific I could look for it so far google isnt helping much

If you are already soft modded you can put in the AID disk and use the TSOP option in the AID BIOS section. Wink

The "Cromwell" bios is only for booting linux and will not allow you to boot backup games or homebrew stuff. Really its no different then flashing any product.. Once you have it in manufacturer mode by soldiering those points which wes linked you too it will allow you to flash..

enjoy the sites!

You need to find out what ver xbox you have for sure and the size BIOS it can hold, when you know the size you can find an X-2 BIOS on the Auto installer deluxe disk that is the same size and flash it directly and bypass the cromwell BIOS altogether.

Use the latest ver of AID found here: http://www.aidtracker.com/

Use this to identifie you xbox ver: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/determine_version_of_xbox.htm

ok so i have the aid disc and i think it soldered up pretty good. i dont know exactly what version it is though because i just have the motherboard for it, i can narrow it down to 1.2 or 1.3 but without the serial # on the case is there a serial on the board any where or version number. I used the bios checker program on the aid disc and it says the bios is 5105 retail and when i go to the bios flashing menu on the disc it has (256)5101 retail up at the top in the box so i'm guessing its a 256k. Also how do i use the bios flasher on the aid disc do i use flash w/ 256k bios and then how do i know which bios to use there is like 10 different x2 bioses.

Any of the X-2 BIOS unless it is for a ver 1.6 or a multi BIOS.

Most use the evox M8 BIOS and since i TSOP 1.0 and 1.1 i use the 1mb x-2 5035 myself but the M8 Bios will work fine.

cool thanks for that but now I have a new problem when I go to flash it it comes up and says press y to flash and I do that and then it comes up with another blue box that says:

Manufacturers ID da Device ID 8c
Flash type Winbond - W29f020
Erasing.

then it looks like there is a progress bar beneath it but it doesn't move and its been sitting like this for a while now. Is it not doing anything because maybe I didn't solder it all the way? How long should it take?

Heres what I have done:
1. soldered the two points on the board
2. downloaded AID 4.5 and added the bios addon using the program it came with to add the addons then burned it to a cd-r.
3. booted up into aid 4.5
4. scrolled down to advanced options hit A
5. scrolled down to BIOS Flashing Menu hit A
6.scrolled down to Flash with 256k Bios hit A
7.Selected Evox M8+ for the desired Bios hit A its the first one on the list but like I said I wasn't sure which to pick because there are so many like 8 different Evox M8's, 10 different x2's, 2 different yoshi's, and a FlashBIOS 3.03 Confused
8. comes up with blue box saying:

Flash Bios
Manufacturers ID da Device ID 8c
Flash type Winbond - W29f020
Press Y to Flash Bios

so I press Y
9.The Box changes to say this:

Flash Bios
Manufacturers ID da Device ID 8c
Flash type Winbond - W29f020
Erasing.

with the empty progress bar underneath and then it does nothing but sit there I have let I it go for 15 20 min now with nothing not an error or anything.

According to AID it is a v1.2 Xbox and the bios is a (256)5101 retail
It has the stock hdd with SID 5.01 installed on it I beleive
you tell me if I am doing something wrong because I am stumped I figured I would maybe mess up the bios or something but I cant even get it to erase. I just tryied resoldering it and that didnt change a thing. If I just shut it off and turn it back on nothing has changed. I dont think it is freezing up because the screensaver is turning on after a while and I can get it to go away by hiting B
