Now that we've seen even more of it, the exclusively made Xbox game, Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict, is one of those games that defies strict categorization. It's a first- and third-person shooter born from the Unreal PC series, so it comes from a first-person shooter background. But it's not by any means a traditional FPS.

Epic has experimented for the last year with the limits of the gameplay mechanics and slowly evolved the first-person shooting elements into a hybrid melee combat shooter. They've added a distinct close-combat fighing system that's energetic, deadly, simple to learn, but deep as any great fighting game. Epic has undoubtedly turned it into something else entirely, something that already looks special. That means the only thing a game site like ours can do is to throw this multiple genre title into the action category and pray. Or think up a new category -- anyone for "multiple-person shooter-fighter?" No? didn't think so.



In any case, Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict still looks, sounds and feels like an Unreal game, but it plays like something genuinely new -- a first-person shooter that plays with equal parts shooting and melee fighting. What makes it even harder to describe is the insanely springy jumping that takes place. The double and triple jumps join the wall jumps to make this game as intersting as PowerStone when it first came out.



Now that Midway has picked up the game from Microsoft, we're getting better, deeper looks at it, plus a lot more access to write features and show screens, movies, and more.
