How to swap your old HDD to a new Xbox without a modchipPublished by DJB on 2006-07-11 Category: HardDrive | Page Views: 9,455
Introduction
This tutorial will show you how to create a modified Eeprom which will allow a different Xbox to use your old HDD, all done without needing to have a Modchip installed.
A couple of weeks ago my good old Xbox decided to finally die. This had a 120gb HDD in it, and I didn’t want to let it go to waste. So when I bought my new Xbox, I wanted to be able to use my old HDD in it again, which was locked to my old Eeprom. This guide is how I managed to do it.
Required Equipment / Stuff:
- Your old HDD (Locked, if it’s unlocked this will not work). - Your Eeprom from your old Xbox. - Your Eeprom from your new Xbox. - Torx 10, 15, and 20 Screwdrivers to open your Xbox. - FTP Software on your PC to access your Xbox. - LiveInfo Beta 3 (by Yoshihiro) - ConfigMagic 1.6 Final (This must be installed on to the Xbox that you want to put the old HDD in. If the new box is not softmodded you must do so).
Steps:
1. Making a new Eeprom to work with the new Xbox and old HDD.
1a. Open your old Eeprom with Liveinfo like shown in the screenshot below:
1b. Write down your Serial Number, Online Key, and Unique HDD Key from your eeprom.
1c. Open your new Eeprom, and insert the information you collected from the old Eeprom.
1d. Once you’ve entered this information, save the Eeprom to your Hard Drive as shown in the screenshot on the right.
2. Loading the Eeprom on to the Xbox.
2a. Make sure that ConfigMagic is installed on your Xbox to start with. Next, FTP to where you have ConfigMagic installed and go to the Data folder and delete the following files:
Blank V1.0 EEPROM.bin Blank V1.1 EEPROM.bin eeprom.bin
eeprom.cfg
Once they are deleted, FTP over your new eeprom.bin file.
2b. Boot up ConfigMagic on your Xbox and go to the Main Menu by pressing the Start button.
2c. If you wish to use the HDD out of the new Xbox for your PC, use the Unlock HDD feature to unlock the new HDD.
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT TURN YOUR XBOX OFF AT THIS POINT, OR YOU WILL HAVE A DEAD XBOX.
2d. You now have to update the Eeprom on the Xbox with the one you just transferred by FTP.
Select the Update Xbox Eeprom feature to do this, as shown below in the screenshot.
2e. To check if the Eeprom is loaded on correctly, click on the Load Xbox Eeprom option. The new eeprom you transferred by FTP should now be on your Xbox. Time now to turn off your Xbox.
3. Open up your new Xbox and rip out the old HDD. Throw in your old HDD and put the Xbox back together.
4. Boot your Xbox. If it’s all worked, you should now have access to your old HDD.
