I've heard good things about the X3 chip, on the other side some people like the smartxx some don't, I personally have Xenium and Xenium Ice. It makes for easy ftp to your xbox. And the SMB allows you to browse your files in the xbox from your pc.

The chip has no bearing in regard to "doing anything that a computer can do".

The hardware has more to do with that. Your chip serves basically one major function..that is to hold a hacked bios. Essentially, all a mod chip is, is memory.

Now, some mod chips contain operating systems and more memory than others. This affords you the ability to store multiple bios', and the tools can help you manage your eeprom, lock/unlock HD, format HD, change where your bios boots to..yada yada yada..

The X3 is probably the more powerful out of any of the chips I have played around with. That however, doesn't make it better. You have to look at the extra features it gives you and assess if it's worth the price jump.

In all honesty, the Xenium ice mod chip is a great chip. It affords you the benefit of an OS, ample memory, and a very easy to use interface. The features that it lacks can easily be accomplished by utilizing other tools that manipulate the bios and change the characteristics of the bios, then just reflash the chip.

It's a very easy chip to install too.

The SmartXx V2 is an awesome chip. I also really like it.

The Xenium Ice and SmartXX V2 both carry a one year warranty, so you have some peace of mind as well.

People put way too much thought into the chip they choose. Granted, there are chips out there that you should avoid, but when it comes to what your xbox abilities are going to be...dont look at the chip. Look at the software you can load and launch after your chip is installed and flashed. That is what affords you all the fun under the sun!

I have a machine with a X-Changer V2 mod chip ($20.00 chip) and I can do anything with my machine that you can do with the X3 (except maybe install the X3 Control Panel...lol). Now, I may have to launch an application to manage my eeprom but so what... I still have all the abilities and didn't have to spend near 60.00 to do it.

Granted, I have several machines, all with different chips..as that is how I get accustomed to each one. If I had to pick a favorite chip or maybe a top five..here would be my preference.

Xenium Ice
Smart XX V2
X-Changer V2
SmartXX LT OPX
X3

Later man

Nope

Its only a 256k bios, but you can get other things like PBL loader for debug bios and xboxhdm or AID 2.02 to make your HDD.

Only the big money chips have built in options. The X3 is worth the money, it will do more than the X-changer any day of the week without quesiton. But it depends what you are going to use it for.

I bought the xchanger thinking I could put the new X2cl bios on it, but it only takes a 256k. SO i sold it to a buddy.> Now it served his purpose for XBMC and coping games to the HDD and some roms...But a softmod does taht.

Look at the modchip comparison menu at the top of the screen..That is what they are there for.

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-modchips.html

And see what you want, how much you want to spend, and then realizing what you can get.

An X3 has the most advance BIOS made for it specifically. That is why it is a great chip. Most Xenium and Smart guys us the X2 bios or a Evox.

They don't put out there own HACKED bios, but they put out their own CROMWELL OS, so it has a lot of features as well.

Realize all features in the X3 are from a hacked bios, not a cromwell bios.

But you have advantages where you have disadvantages.

An Xhanger is good for like what I described, recovering a dead box, playing copies and movies and crap like that. If you are interested in development the X3 IS the only way to go.

hmm, that was very interesting stuff you said there so i guess ill go with the X3 chip i looked at some of the features and i found that you can change the start "flubber" screen. which is one of the things that ive always wanted to do ever since ive had my xbox. but i have a quick question. after you install the modchip does it automatically boot from it and not the chit on the mobo? and if it ddoes then doesnt the X3 come with cromwell bios that i can flash with a hacked bios? because i have a very dead xbox and after my dad ound out he went nucking futz!!!! well i need to know because ive got my mind set on a X3 chip. laterzzz

What I am saying is basically, all chips serve the same function.

They enable you to launch a hacked bios as opposed to launching the retail kernel. Honestly, thats really the main function of a mod chip..no matter how many toys it comes with. The primary function is to launch a hacked bios.

Where chips differ, besides warranty, quality of chip, and how much memory the chip has (storage) is if it has an OS or not.

The X3 has a pretty extensive OS, but I guarantee you that you will not even bother with most of the tools.

How many bios' do you plan on having? You only need one really. So what if a chip can have 8 different banks...

Now, if you are going to run an LCD, then I say go with the X3. If you are just looking to play your emu's, movies, mp3's, game backups, etc.. etc... why spend 55.00 when you can spend 20.00

The X3 warranty isn't all that great, whereas a lot other chips are offering a full year.

Don't get me wrong, the X3 mod chip is a great chip. It's not for noobs though. Be prepared for learning curves..although you have that with all chips and installs, just more so with the X3.

Are you concerned with backing up your eeprom?

Are you concerned whether or not you can configure your bios to boot to F instead of C on the fly?

Are you concerned with being able to change your fan speed on the fly?

If so, go with the X3.

If not, go with SmartXX LT OPX or X-Changer.

Do you plan on formatting your HD with a chip? Or, do you plan on doing it with an autoinstaller like AID 2.0?

Are you even adding a larger HD?

Ultimately, I can do anything with the X Changer that you can do with the X3 except for store as many bios and store the eeprom data into flash.

Now, I may have to run an application to do what the X3 does, but ultimately I can do it. There are apps out there to grab eeprom and backup to HD, there are apps out there to format your HD, there are apps to change how your bios boots, heck, with AID 2.0 I just install all the other dashboards to myapps folder so I can just pull up avalaunch or another dash other than evox if I want. I dont even have to worry about changing how the bios boots.

The X3 mod chip is for the more advanced modder. It's not for someone looking to get over on the man...which unfortunately is a large percentage of the scene anymore. The X2 4983 bios or the M8 plus bios will server you fine. It's a 256k bios that fits on the Xchanger and will allow you to do all you need, that is unless you are into developement.

What are you looking for out of your xbox mod? You need to answer those questions before you even think about buying your chip.

And, as far as softmods go, sure they can do all the fun stuff too, but if you want to add a larger HD then you have to do a hotswap which some people aren't comforable with.

If you aren't adding a larger HD and your needs are primal, then go with a softmod. If you muck it up, you can put an inexpensive chip on.

I dont like softmod solutions. I like having the chip installed so I can handle any issues that come about immediately. Also, 99.9% of all machines I do have a larger HD. It's just much easier to handle with a chip in my opinion. I have not tried a hot swap though, but I also know I don't really want to Wink

You can also change the flubber screen if you own the X-Changer. You just have to utilize a different program to do so. Then reflash the chip with the new bios.

Like I said, there is always another way to do something. The X3 however does have some on the fly built in tools that do it for you. If on the fly flubber modification is extremely important to you, knock yourself out. But to spend an extra 30 dollars on something you see for a few seconds sounds a bit silly to me...but then again I'm frugal...lol.

what type of xbox do you have?
I`m not one for pushing tsop flashes onto people, but
as modgod put it, there is no drawback`s and tsop flashes are easier
to do than fitting a chip with no dosh involved.

also if you have a freind with A chipped xbox of the same model, you could run
your eeprom on his/her xbox an lock a hdd up for use on your xbox.

I always buy older xbox`s second hand now, I find the dvd drives are better (The latest samsung and the latest hitachi are shit) and I can always throw in a new hdd using one of the two way`s I`ve mentioned.
