But when i tryed my friends tonight i boot through the same savegame and get to the menu , choose install softmod , it appears to install and when i hit open tray , the system reboots , the drive closes, and it apperas that a softmod has not takenplace as i can not load aid once it reboots. I have a samsung drive while he as a thompson drive. any ideas what could be wrong? His kernal version is 1.00.4034.01.

I don't think the Thomson drives read as many types of media as the Samsung drive. Maybe you could try burning it to a different CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R/DVD+R.
I had the same problem when I was getting started with the modding and it turned out my Thomson drive doesn't read the type of DVD+R I was trying to use.

thanks for the quick reply. but the problem seems to be before i even get to using my burned aid. its when i am using the savegame exploit to install softmod , so that i can use my aid cd. if i go further and also try to install a dash with sid it works , but wont play any burned audio cds or my aid cd.
