I am wondering how to turn off the LED for Evolution X, or at least change it. I imagine an LED change on EvoX involves delving into the BIOS but I have never done such tinkering, how would I go about this?

A bit late answering this post; but here goes, the LED color can be changed for the EvolutionX BIOS using the Windows application EVTool.

Check the nfo file's revision history for BIOS versions supported by the various releases.

The latest EVTool 1.0.9 only supports M8+ and meetoo M8 BFMs.

Thanks buddy! Better late than never they say. I have long since ditched M8-plus and everything EvoX since I found out their best BIOS doesn't support additional RAM or CPU clocking speed. Thanks anyway though!

Also just so you know if you simply switch the dashboard to UnleashX you can control the LED from the settings menu

Well yeah, but the M8+ BIOS when active will still switch the LED to orange when a game or app is launched in that case. Or at least the stock copy on my first modchip did.

I suppose it depends on what you want from your LED display. The final version of the UX dash v584 (BTW not the best) has, I think, eight different functions that can be customised to have any of the LED display options possible ie. from solid green (Default) to flashing red/green/yellow.

The main reasons to use UnleashX in preference to EvoX are that UX has a built in File Manager and many other facilities you only get with EvoX via apps.

Even if you want an EvoX main dash for some of its unique features like BIOS flashing and Eeprom backup having UnleashX and XBMC installed as apps should be, IMHO, recommended practice.

But I'd say the reverse is actually the better choice: use UnleashX or XBMC as your main dash and install EvoX as an app.

Since I have been using X2 4983 on my TSOP, iND-BiOS 5004 on my chip and XBMC dash, I just use XBMC's options since they don't have there own LED settings like M8+ so the dash settings are undisputed outside the dash. XBMC only has about five options but it's enough for me, each color solid, cycle, and off. For a long time now I just been leaving the LED off and I have to say it's my favorite.

I think I have tried that UX version from a HeXEn disc actually. You are right it is terrible, highly unstable with most of the older skins and the file manager actually has problems reading and writing to flash drives the earlier versions didn't. The UnleashX file manager is generally great and the only reason I have UX in my apps. The X, Y, and Z partition access of course. I'm really disappointed that XBMC's final official release (3.5.3 as far as I know) doesn't have X, Y, and Z access. Oh well.

EvoX is a good initial dash post-softmodding because of the backup and flash options. Although it only wants to flash M8+ without coaxing of course, and can't flash SHARP's if I remember correctly. I keep a copy of EvoX, but I don't really know why. It's much better to just use a flash app and backup manually, more flexibility that way. It's really sad but ironic that the only dash with evolution in the name is the most decayed and least updated one. At least they paved the way for better dashes, and in that sense, they earned the namesake!

Agreed, I like XBMC as my dash, UX and EvoX as apps. If XBMC didn't exist I would definitely go any pre-V584 UX dash and EvoX app, no hesitation. Sorry EvoX, as important as you were to the Xbox, your time as the practical choice has long since ended.

You could try the UX .40 it was an unofficial release I did some time ago and its in the DL section here. But yeah avoid the last official release its buggier than a psych ward. I would have to check but Im pretty sure it was the last of the .38's that was the best official Ux.

I dont own a chipped XBOX so couldnt say if Ux will override the LCD settings but I know with a softmod it can override the LCD settings in the kernel patch.

The version of UX I use is UnleashX 0.39.0222A Build 572. There was a limited v583 release which, if I recall correctly displays in the UX Settings as v582, and then the 'final' UX version v584.

The problem I have with v584 (and v583) is I that it introduced a serious glitch. The Game Saves Manager won't display anything but the 'parent' game save of any attached memory device. The game saves on the HDD are displayed perfectly but on memory devices the individual saves for each game are all blank.

This renders useless one of the main functions of the Game Saves Manager: copying from the HDD to a memory device. You have no idea whether the copy has worked and, of course, since it isn't shown you can't transfer any game saves from the memory device to the HDD.

I didn't know there had been a 0.4 unofficial release so thanks for the info on that.

I think Rocky5 used UnleashX V0.39.0212 Build v570 for his Xbox Softmod Tool set GUI which is a good endorsement for using an older UX version as you'll find.

UX .40 sounds interesting, and thanks for the Build 572 info. I'll give them both a try after I get a new board and DVD drive, however long that will take.

583, what a let down, of all the places to introduce a shortcoming it had to be one of the most important places for softmods.

I had an old version of UX that I never noted the version of before I stupidly deleted without backing up when 'upgrading' to a newer disfuntional version. 39 B 572 will likely be much better, but still I miss the one I had. I think it was actually in the 36 or 37 series, quite aged.

Rocky5 used V570 for his softmod tool's GUI? That is a fine endoresment, anything that wiley scott approves is good enough for me!

If either of you want a modchip, I have a spare Aladdin XT2. I don't have a header for it, and I need to repair the chip. They sold it to me with a huge bridge on the Lattice ispMACH, what a buch of scat jugglers! So Haven't tested it. It most likely works and has a 256KB bank. Has the friction fit solderless SST fitter, so you might be able to give it an SST with 512KB. Probably has M8+ with the default E root boot path on it. Or at least that's usually how those clowns operate.

There is at least one place you can find old UX version archived right back to some very early ones: EurAsia. I hope it is OK to mention that here.

To get access to those archved downloads you'll have to go through some hoops now. It used to be fairly open via a catchpa but because it was hacked they introduced a new sign-in and verification system which is as user unfriendly as can be imagined. Good luck with that.

A reliable source for v572 is some AID and SID versions. They too use a UX based GUI and the softmod "menu.xbe" you'll find using AID/SID's own file manager is a UX dash launcher and usually v572.

All you need to do is copy it and change the name to "default.xbe", put it inside a folder named UX572 or whatever you fancy, install that in Apps, reboot and launch it from youur main dash menu. It'll generate it own default item.xml and config.xml but you can easily replace the latter with your main dash config.xml tp mirror that but using v572.

Obviously you could also use the same XBE to replace your main dash but don't, particularly with a softmod, unless you are 100% sure how to do that.

It's good to lean on the side of caution, but I think your fine with that name drop. Plus it isn't a one strike policy around here, I'm still unscathed after all.

Thanks for the lead! I have dealt with EA recently, they aren't so bad. Not as bad as dealing with IRC trials in my opinion.

Wow, UX is a lot more important to tools than I realized.

I did know UX XBE's generated their own items.xml, I wish I would have known the config as well. I spent quite a while not long ago playing with the config.xml of a HeXEn installed UX copy with Notepad++. I removed most of the HeXEn copy elements to make it more like past official release version's GUI. Wasn't such a waste of time though, nice to see from the inside.

Dash setting, boot paths, and boot security are thankfully things I understand. I keep an E/Dash folder with Dash/XBMC and Dash/UnleashX. Between boot toggle switch flips run the TSOP with X2 4983 & UX dash, or chip with iND-BiOS 5004 & XBMC dash. Even if both my dashes somehow get botched, I keep a copy of each dash in the apps folder, ready to sort out file system mayhem. I use a RemoteX/EvoX boot disc to have emergency app folder access.

Also, you can of course with any non-stock BIOS keep a backup dash in the root of C in place of the M$ dash. Obviously not an option with a 1.6 until you have external BIOS storage unfortunately.

Just be careful repurpising the menu.xbe because some installers the menu.xbe isnt UnleashX but rather the entry exploit xbe. An easy way to spot good vs bad in the later versions of Ux is to use preview videos. The bad Ux builds it will stutter and black screen then show vid then black screen again. Good Ux the preview video will be smooth

Worthwhile saying that but the advice was meant only for AID/SID and, to be specific: the SID installer "menu.xbe" found in AID v4.4, v4.53 and, I think, AID v4.53 Lite. Those are the ones I've used as sources for alternative UX dash versions.

It was Heimdall of HeXEn fame and well known Xbox-Scene guru who first suggested using the AID/SID "menu.xbe" as a way of updating UX. At the time I didn't have a PC, just my DC and a TV STB for browsing so couldn't download anything. I'd been sent an AID disc by a helpful guy on another forum but found the v584 dash it updated my v543 too had problems, notably the glitched Game Save Manager.

Heimdall pointed out that "menu.xbe" was also a UX dash launcher and I could try that. I did, using safe practices of course, found it was a different UX version: v572 and have been using that version ever since.

In AID/SID it should just launch the SID installer menu even if used in situ NOT the installer itself. The "menu.xbe" is just a UX dash launcher. Without AID/SID's installer menu config.xml to tell it what to do it can't launch that.

When extracted to an empty folder, renamed "default.xbe" (optional unless installing it as an app) , it will generate its own default dashboard config.xml and item.xml like any other UX dash launcher XBE.

AID/SID has at least three other XBEs in the same folder: "install.xbe", "vc.xbe" and "evox.xbe". Even extracted to an empty folder I would not risk playing around with any of those, particularly the install.xbe.

However I'd guess the evox.xbe is an EvoX dash launcher used for the AID/SID eeprom backup menu and later, after the dash is installed on a chipped machine, the chip flashing facility Evox also includes.

What the "menu.xbe" is retasked or used for in other installers I have no idea, I've only seen that particular name used in AID/SID. But I think there are installer packages out there which 'borrow' from AID/SID.

What they do with their naming/renaming/retasking I have no idea so, like any other UX XBE, it is sensible to be wary. Do not make assumptions about what it does just from its name even if exactly the same.
