Hi HQ. I haven't posted on a while, ima jump straight to the point. I've used the regular composite cables on my xbox since forever I always thought they were fine that is until. The other day i went to my friends house and i played an original xbox game on his 360. And to me it looked Amazing on HDMI. All of a sudden i noticed how crappy games on composite cables are. So Part 1 of my question is will component (blue, green, red, yellow, red) cables on my original xbox look any where near the way they did on x360. Give me a comparison of both and tell me if they will look better or if they look the same with HD cables on both systems, Particularly The following games: NFSU1 & 2, DOOM 3and RoE, HALO 1 & 2, Half-life 2, Splinter Cell & sequels, GTA series, Ghost Recon Island Thunder (This is the game i played), NINJA GAIDEN, and BLACK. Part 2 of the question is are cheap generic cables from china the same picture quality and durability as expensive-ass OEM Microsoft composite cables. Thanks
P.S I have a 360 but since i have a generic hdd i could never have backwards comp. thats why i never noticed.

Component on the original Xbox will allow most games to be played in 480p and there should be a very obvious picture quality improvement over Composite AV cables.
I use a RGB SCART cabled Xbox with a (PAL) CRT TV for those games which don't support 480p. That TV has a 100Hz refresh rate option and with RGB SCART cables I get the best 480i/578i picture quality I believe is possible from the Xbox. However my 480p capable same size CRT alongside that using Component cables produces noriceably better PQ.
480p is 480p on whatever system and whether that is delivered via HDMI, VGA, DVI or Component cabling is almost irrelevant all other things being equal. But often they're not. How the TV or monitor handles the source and what processing it does to the picture may depend on the cable type being used. Obviously that can only be tested on a specific system.
My general advice would be for any game, like Half-Life 2 or others which have re-worked/re-mastered versions, is always go for the XB360 one in preference to almost any of the Xbox originals. They'll support 720p at least and should look and often play better than the original game played using the Xbox emulation software the XB360 includes.
The superb Half-Life 2, Orange Box version for the XB360, running at 1080p is a stunning looking game. The original Xbox version at 480p is still a great game and looks fine but 480p versus 1080p on a biggish TV - the superior PQ of the latter is obvious.
So Component with the original Xbox is a big yes. For many reasons it would be worth using even if your XB360 included Xbox backwards support.
The offical MS Component cables are excellent but I've bought and used far cheaper ones and found nothing wrong with them at all. But I know from bitter experience that there are poorly made cables out there, not specifically original Xbox Component ones, but in general. It is a lottery, some work perfectly others, due to build quality or similar issues, won't.

Sorry but I can't give you any useful information on cable brands. The non-official original Xbox Component cable I have was bought from a small independent high street AV shop in the UK over 4 years ago now.
I think it cost me £13.99 ($22) which was then getting on for half the price of the official ones being sold new. But I can't remember the make and there is nothing on the cable itself to help with that either.
I'd look on Ebay, Amazon or wherever and see what's available and then do a bit of research to see if there are any reviews or customer feedback.
Good luck.

Make yourself one if you have a spare. Chop a vga cable off an old monitor at in-organics and recycle some rcas or buy some new ones. Otherwise they are less than $10 on amazon.

There's more to it than that.
Unless you're suggesting he wire it in directly to the Xbox he'd have to cannibalize a Xbox cable for the plug end too. That would also have to have all the pin-out connections or at least those required for Component output. So he might as well buy the proper cable.
Perhaps you're talking about getting VGA out. Well again there is more to it than just modding a cable which I think does have to be wired in directly.
The problem is Xbox doesn't support VGA natively and has to be further modded to do so. A lot of hassle just to get the same 480p/720p/1080i you could get with a Component cable.

Go for the Monster brand cable, I found one on Amazon for about $10 USD total in the package. You might not get a great deal on a new one, but have no frets going used, these are extremely well made and durable. I also suggest this cable because the optical digital audio cable that goes with it are so common you can usually find them pretty cheap. I am guessing it is due to the adapter necessary for it to plug in that only works on Monster brand components. If you don't care about digital audio just go for whatever component AV cable. _________________ 320GB ST3320620A 7200RPM 16MB Cache
