Hello

I have bought a tower pc and have attempted the hotswap method exactly as is detailed on:

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html

However, when I boot into xbxhdm on my xbox has given me to error (with the xbox's ide and power cables unplugged) it telsl me that the hdd is still locked and therefore I cannot rebuild it from scratch. (I do not have the eeprom).

I have tried powering the xbox's hdd from both the xbox's power cable and the power cable in my pc. I have tried unplugging the IDE from the xbox and into the pc at various different times. The pc does detect the drive and boot fine into xbxhdm but tells me that option 1 is invalid.

Am I doing something wrong here? Could someone tell me very clearly how to hotswap so that the hdd will be unlocked?

thanks

I have never performed a hotswap before. From what I understand the process can be tricky and unreliable.

Try this former member's site. He should have a more up-to-date tutorial on the method:

Let us know how it goes.

many thanks, in that video he mentions a 'pimp' disc for the computer used for the hotswap. Is this different the xbxhdm?

He made a fork of xboxhdm, so some of the menu options say 'pimped'

Does his hotswap video link to the pimped disk?

no but I've managed to downlaod the pimp disc and try it. The hdd is still locked. Ive tried everything, even tried using atapwd with the master password but I dont know what is it and cannot find it. Hotswap doesn't work Ive tried it many time and different ways. And Xplorer360 just cannot identify a FATX drive when I plug it into my pc

I don't wanna leave you hanging here.

Try this forum:

http://www.EXTERNAL LINK REMOVED

They'll be a better help with hotswap since I am ignorant of the ins and outs of the process.

SPPV checks those fora sometimes on the active topics. He might be able to help, but he is generally pretty busy these days. Others who have done might be able to help too.

Good luck

Forget what I said above. I got a solution for you.

#1 Disable detection on the primary IDE channel (its in BIOS/Setup of your computer)
#2 Be sure the XBOX is kicking an E12 before swapping (power cable to DVD must remain connected)
#3 Open the XBOXHDM config file and edit the timeout value to 100
#4 If E12 fails put a CD in the XBOX and rip it, while ripping hotswap
#5 If that fails put in a game and once its loaded hotswap

I have used the hotswap method many times to softmod xboxes. It's all about the timing. Here I'll break it down for you.

Don't do anything with your xbox yet.

Remove all HDD from your computer, and put the XboxHDM boot disk in.

Power up your PC. When the BIOS screen comes up on your PC, hit the Pause/Break key before your PC searches for hard drives. For my computer, I press it as soon as anything appears on the monitor.
When you press this key, your computer should freeze. This is normal.

Go to your xbox.

Make sure your DVD drive is unplugged and your Xbox is close enough to your computer that you can reach the computers IDE cable without unplugging the HDD power cord from the Xbox.

With the DVD drive disconnected and the HDD connected to the Xbox power on the xbox.

This is where your timing comes into play.

When you power on your xbox, you will recieve Error 12.
As soon as you see this screen unplug the IDE cable from the HDD and plug it into your PC. Then press the spacebar to let your PC continue booting. You need to do this quickly.

Between getting the E12 screen and pressing spacebar on your computer, you should take less than 10 seconds. I usually do it in about 5. If it sits on the E12 screen for more than few seconds, it seems to re-lock the HDD.

You should now have XboxHDM running with an unlocked HDD.

(If you're using nDure, make sure you've selected the correct kernel, or your Xbox will boot to a black screen.)

The problem now is I no longer have a tower pc. Could this be done on a laptop using a SATA to usb converter?

I've managed to get a tower computer and have tried that method.

The issue now is that after I hit space bar (after connecting the hdd), the computer hangs on Boot from CD :

Please advise

Does is say "Boot from CD:" before or after you press the space bar?

If it says that before you press the space bar, then it may be a different key on your PC to resume booting. Try different keys to continue. (Such as the Pause|Break key)

If it says that after you press space, then it can't boot from your Xbox HDM disc. Maybe it was burned incorrectly, or it's scratched, or there may be a problem with your CD drive...

What kernel is your Xbox? I'll put together an ISO for you. That way you could just burn it with imgburn without having to worry about putting together your boot disc.
