Ok, I am what I suppose you would call a noob at this, never modded a console in my life lol but thought I would give this a try anyway. The other day I saw a very cheap second hand xbox so thought Hey! I could mod that I have a electronics at gcse and can solder fairly confidently. Anyway here is what I have done so far…
Cut 2 windows out of the case so you can see the hard drive and dvd drive
Cut out the jewl
Cleared the jewl
Cut out a dvd window so you can see the disk spinning
Spayed the xbox case white
Swaped the red/green eject ring leds for blue ones
Added blue leds to all 4 controller ports
Softmodded the console
That all works fine and im very happy with it if I do say so myself. Now here are the things I’m no so sure about…
Usb port
I would like to put a usb port on the back of my console. I have a cheap usb extension wire (came with an old mp3 player) I can use for parts. Below is a diagram of how I plan to fit it - 1. Is this right? 2. What would happen if I had a controller and usb device pluged in at the same time on the same port? 3. Is there a better way to do it?
HDD activity led
I also want a HDD activity led, ive looked at other tutorials and plan to do it like this (see diagram below) - 1. I am unsure what resistor value to use? 2. Is this right? 3. Is there a better way to do it?
Any advice or help you can give me would be greatly appriceated.
Thanks.

You should be able to do the usb port like you have labeled, but im pretty sure it can only be one or the other. You arnt goin to beable to use a controller and the port at the same time. _________________

Why put in a USB port? the controller spots are USB ports. The HDD light is easy, just buy a X3 mod chip and it has a Lan and HDD light for it. _________________

Yeah, thats why hes connecting the usb to the controller port. That way he can use a usb keyboard or some other device without having to mod the keyboard. I was thinking about doing that myself seeing as hox I only have 2 controllers that work anyway. _________________

Thanks bongripz216
Yea I didn’t think I would be able to use both at the same time, ill just have to remember not to have any usb device plugged in if using controller port 3 lol. If I did by accident would it seriously harm the xbox?
Another quick question regarding the USB port, thismorning I cut apart my usb extension wire and was happy to find it used the standard usb colours (white, green, red, black) but it has a 5th wire aswell? Its silver, i.e. has no plastic coating round it?
It it attached to the outside of the usb port (see diagram). Does this need to be soldered to the controller port/xbox anywhere or can I just ignore it?
Thanks.

No two things pluged in at the same time wont fry your xbox.
Yes the bare wire can be set aside just tape it back or cut it flush with the wire caseing

Cheers bongripz216
All I need now is some information on the HDD activity led as I described in my first post
Actually on the subject of HDDs...
Today I came across a 20gb HDD in a draw (think it was from my old emachines computer). The drive looks in fine condition and im considering replacing my current xbox HDD with it. I found this tutorial - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203286 - which looks good, Just wondering if its a good tutorial to follow?
The tutorial says about locking the drive, the HDD I have is a 20 GB WD Caviar 200AA but I cant find out if it is lockable or not? Might try it anyway though unless someone can tell me otherwise?
Also the HDD has all my old computers data on it, when I format it to be used in the xbox will this be a problem? Or will it just format the HDD and delete all the data on it?

That tutorial looks fine... This is the one I used: http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-153.html . Also, it wont matter if it has data on it, cause when you format it it erases everything. Just make sure nothing important is on it, cause when I did mine I lost about 15 gigs of music and all my old photoshop work. If the hdd isnt on the list, the only way to find out if its lockable is to try it out. Don't worry bought asking questions man, we're all glad to help out. _________________

Only thing id say is that the 20 Gig HDD is kind of a waste. The stock drive is 10 gig so adding 10 more wont give you much more space then you already have. _________________
