(crossposted from the xbox-scene and team-xecuter forums)
I have an X3 chipped 1.0 xbox. My old mobo got fried and I got a new one, but my old hdd was locked to my old mobo. Now that the new one's in there, it obviously won't work.
My question is: can I use the X3 Bios's "Restore EEPROM" function to make my new mobo identical to the old one, so that my locked drive will, in essence, think it's paired up with the same mobo it always was?
I looked at the EEPROM backup info and it shows the last EEPROM backup as sometime in 2004, which is before I got the box (used). Assuming the 2004 backup is from the same mobo I got with the system, should restoring the EEPROM to my new mobo fix the problem?
Thanks, and sorry if this is confusing.

Is the harddrive stock or upgraded? _________________

If you can connect to the chip with FTP, I would recommend backing up the eeprom to your PC just in case. _________________

be careful eeproms are version specific, so if the version on your new xbox is different, it won't work. I went through that routine before.
If you have the old eeprom backed up (you physically went through the X3Cl and made the backup, and if you have the same version xbox, yes, you can restore, but first,
Make a data file in the X3Cl menu to your hdd, so you save your settings from the old one. Really, you should use configmagic to make a backup on the new xbox and stock hdd and then swap everything out.
Now, in the event its a differnt version, connect to the X3Cl menu on boot through FTP and find the eeprom file in the Admin folder.Download it to your computer.
Get a program (windows) from the downloads section or Xbins called LiveInfo3 by Yoshihiro. This will not only allow you to create a new eeprom.bin from old information, but change the version of your eeprom.
I would defintely reccoment doing this. To make sure it would work, I would open the eeprom from configmagic backup and then edit-in the old information from the other eeprom and then do a "Save As".
You should then be able to get your hdd back.
And do you have your xbox locked for XLive, b/c with the modchip you don't need a locked hdd, only with a softmod. _________________ XBOX v1.6

Thanks for the info.
I don't really care about live, and I'm not sure why the hdd was locked in the first place. Just an unfortunate occurrence.
Just so I'm absolutely clear on everything you mean here (these will be n00b
questions...):
X3Cl = X3 Config live = the X3 bios config program, yes? the one where the restore eeprom option is in the first place?
I've never used configmagic. at all. also, the hard drive I currently have in there is a friend's unlocked xbox HDD (160gb seagate, with all his stuff on it). will backing up the eeprom from my x3 negatively affect anthing on his drive?
Thanks. I think this advice might see me through. I really appreciate it.

X3Cl is the bios program, and if you ever decide to quick boot, you will hold the white button to access the menu again. (this is an option you have to enable before you are required to hit the button.
First off, if you did make the actions to back up your old eeprom, then it will be stored on your chip. Don't flash your friends xbox in case you have it in that, or the new xbox yet.
Goto X3Cl, login via ftp (Your xbox ip) login: x3 Pass: x3. Then work your way into the admin folder so you can access you eeprom backup. (eeprom.bin)
Download that file to your computer. Downlaod the program LiveInfo3 by Yoshihiro and open the eeprom.bin in that program.
Copy all that info onto a spare notepad screen .
On the other xbox, using configmagic, ( a hdd locking/unlocking and eeprom editing program on the xbox) and make a backup of that file as well.
Ftp that file back to your comptuer.
Open that in Liveinfo and you will be able to edit-in your old information.
This makes sure you have a similiar version bios. Another version bios will NOT work.
So when you are done ediiting the info into it, save as a different file, calling it eeprom.bin.
With that file, you want to ftp that back to your xbox (anywhere b/c you will be updating it)
Open config magic again and then restore from backup.
REMEMBER
Take complete care whenever using Configmagic or editing your bios, you can lose all working ability of the xbox b/c of some bad code. Just a word tot the wise. I went through one hell of an ordeal when i first started modding, i had a locked hdd and a dead mobo. Only my x3 had my eeprom.bin on it...and long story short, i am very familiar with eeproms...lol
Post back if you need help

Thanks a ton for the detailed response.
Seems like we've gotten a couple of things mixed up in the course of this dialog, though. Most importantly, there's only one xbox involved. This is the sequence of events that led me to where I am noW:
1. My original xbox mobo fried
2. Bought new mobo, installed it, xbox goes to hdd error screen
3. Figuring it must be a locked hdd, I put my friend's unlocked 160gb hdd into my system and it works fine.
My friend is in the process of copying the data from this 160gb onto a new 400gb drive, so once that's done successfully, I should be able to mess around with the 160 without worrying about messing it up. However, from what I understand, messing with the EEPROM doesn't affect the drive at all, just the EEPROM chip on the mobo.
So what I'm getting at is, there's no "other xbox" to use configmagic on, though I should be able to use it from my friend's hdd. There's only this one xbox, which errors out with MY hdd and works fine with my friend's. As I understand it, the EEPROM info that's backed up on the X3 chip (dated 2004) is from my old mobo.
So... since this is all on one box with two different HDDs, what I'm gathering is that I can just ftp out the eeprom.bin from the chip, examine it on my computer, and then manually enter the old eeprom info via configmagic while the xbox is booted with my friend's drive. Is this correct?
When you say "similar version bios", what exactly do you mean? Similar between the "two" xboxes, or similar in terms of the bios that was loaded when the EEPROM was backed up in 2004?
Thanks for working with me on this.

That's the LiveInfo3 results for the eeprom.bin that's saved on the chip.
The hard drive in the info there isn't any one that I've ever used, which wou;d mean it's one that was in the box before I bought it. I'm sort of worried now that the chip might have been installed in another box (though I assume that's more unlikely than the possibility that the same box just had a different drive in it).

The unique HDD key has nothing to do with the actual hard drive, it is the unique key withing the eeprom that is used to calculate the HDD locking password. _________________
What I meant is, I downloaded and ran LiveInfo Beta3 on two different computers, without even loading an eeprom, and the HDD info section (except for the "calculated password" field) was the same on both of them. i.e., it's pre-loaded into the program by the program creator, and doesn't reflect the HDD that was in the xbox system when the eeprom.bin file was created.
I was worried that the HDD info didn't match my own HDD, but I guess that's by design.
edit: wait, I'm retarded. the HDD info section is the HDD in my laptop. the other laptop I tested the program on is the same model as mine. durrrr.

Here's the question I have that, I think, really matters:
Don't the steps that shortacid posted (get eeprom.bin from chip, examine it, get eeprom.bin from current setup via configmagic, replace current eeprom.bin settings with old ones) amount to doing exactly the same thing as just replacing the eeprom from the X3Cl eeprom menu? I feel like I'm being incredibly dense here, but this is all getting pretty confusing to me.
