A friend of mine gave me his xbox in hopes of modding it. It actually belongs to his younger brother. He told me it had some issues (freezing), so I figured at most, I can get some emulators in there.
So I turn on the Xbox, and immediately, I notice it hanging on the Xbox Logo screen. After a short while it loads up the normal MS Dash. The music in the background starts "skipping" at times and while it's "skipping" it makes all operations and movements VERY sluggish throughout the menu.
Anyone know what could be causing this? I did notice some sticky stuff on the xbox so I cleaned that off. Maybe someone spilled something on it?
Any help would be MOST APPRECIATED!

I haven't experience that before but my guess would be 1- the hdd, 2-the ide ribbon or 3- the mobo. You could try to softmod it and swap in a new hdd and see if that fixes it or buy some electical parts cleaner and spray it down. _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

First thing I would is to try and get the serial number out of the box so if something does happen you at least can put a new HD in the system.
I had a similar instance and it was the HDD.

return it to the store lol why void the xbox by tryign to fix it yourself lmao just have someone very persuasive take it to Wal-mart, i have had 4 Xbox's since release day. i've only paid for the original one. (the fourth one i got free not exchanged, see my signature ) and the persuasive person is needed cuz i'm guessing you don't ahve a valid wal-mart receipt

the frezing part i can help... as far as other i dk...
freezin could be cuzed by many reason's BUt just grab a conprrese air spray bottle and spray it off. BECARE FULL spray a lil before u spray on xbox as the spray in liquid could OR WILL damage the xbox ... spray a lil in to thin air then used it on xbox ...

take the xbox apart , look it over ,
dust off the motherboard , check if the heatsinks are firmly attached,
mod it , reformat the harddrive and reinstall msdash ,
try booting without the dvd drive plugged in after u mod it ,
