Hi,
Hope this is he right area to post this. I have successfully modded the stock hdd in softmodding using the softmod installer 2.0. I can backup up my games, which is great.
So I bought a new hdd, making sure that it was listed as lockable. It's the Samsung SP0802N - an 80gb drive. Now I ran the XBOX HDD linux program, having burnt it successfully.
Everything went smoothly up until it was trying to lock my HDD. This is where it asked meif it should, I concurred, and it told me it was aborting.
So, I;m just wondering what might be the issue or what I can do. Further, how important is locking the drive, as I have no intention of using Xbox live, but I do intend to use Xlink KAI. What can I do to resolve this issue, and when do I replace my existing hdd. Is it simply a case of swapping it out, now that the hdd is prepped, bar the locking?
Many thanks in advance

Are you SURE you typed "yes" and not just "y"? I know I had that problem a couple times in XBOXHDM. Be certain you type the full "yes" out. Also, I assume you have the xbox eeprom.bin available to lock that new drive? If not, then you need that, and that may be why it aborted.
As for your question "is HDD locking really necessary?", here is my $0.02.
1) If you have a mod-chip, it is ONLY necessary if you plan to run XBox Live! occasionally with the mod chip disabled (the normal BIOS boot MUST detect a locked HDD).
2) If you have only a Softmod, you don't have ANY option here...you MUST lock the HDD (even if you never plan to play on XBox Live!).
Regards,

hi and thanks for replying
i did enter "yes" as the value when I needed to, but got the result of "aborting!" for some reason.
I've retried from scartch but no joy. So I created the DOS boot disk with the tools, and used the "hdlocked - a" command, and when requested for my password I entered the lock password for the hdd, and it told me it was successful.
Now I am not certain if it has done what it needs to do, and I don't know for certain if my drive is locked.

One sure way to find out. Pop it in your stock non-mod chip XBox that you supposedly locked it to and see how it goes. If it wasn't locked, it won't boot (you'll get an error 05).

I successfully softmodded my xbox and failed at my HDD upgrade. I followed the instructions carefully, got error 05 first time, re-did it, got error 6. My bios wouldn't allow me to lock my HDD either, so I just gave up and returned the HDD. My question is, do I have to upgrade my xbox bios before attempting to upgrade my HDD? I currently just have Evox installed w/ the stock HDD. Nothing else changed. Everything runs fine.

Did you lock the hdd to the eeprom using xboxhdm or a modchip? Have you backed up the eeprom yet? You'll find the backup option in the system menu of EvoX. FTP the eeprom file to you pc and then follow xboxhdm tutorial.[/url] _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

I tried locking it using the xboxhdm, but it wouldn't lock. Said something about drive is frozen or something, try turning off auto detect in BIOS. So, I read that you could try it using hdlock, hddisable, so I tried that, said drive is not active. So, I switched the HDD to primary slave (had jumpers on cable select) and it said that it locked. But then when I put it in my xbox, i got the error 6.

hello,
just to update i successfully locked the hdd using hddlock/unlock tools on my pc. my xbox boots up fine, however, there seems to be a problem playing backups freom the hdd, in that they don't. they load the start screens but then go blank or freeze. burnt backups on dvd run fine without problem, and i can backup games to the hdd, they just have troubler unning.
at first i wondered if this was a problem with the jumper setting on cable select, so i switched to master. still no joy

Do you have any free space left on E?
filling E drive up can cause these problems.
If you have filled it up try clearing of about 500MB.
i do have free sapce on about 3gb of it. i'm just wondering if there's anyway to format everything and start from scratch, there seems a problem running any game off the drive, but not the dvd so some protection perhaps?
