I am very new to the scene, however I have been reading all the work that has been put into modding xbox's and appreciate all of the work that has been put forward already, Big Thumbs Up 2 months ago is when i started modding.
Here is the situation. I have softmoded 2 different Xbox's. 1 has a Thomson DVD Drive, and no HDD upgrade, and the other is a Halo Edition with a Philips DVD Drive, and a upgraded 500Gb IDE HDD. Not trying sata conversion just yet. Both have the SID v5.12 installed with the Splinter Cell exploit. I have been able to do LOADS of stuff with both, Emu's, all the Apps etc.
The problem is that Halo 2, and Need for Speed Underground 2, will load the game, play through the initial movies, and take you to the start screen. You hit start and the game will freeze on Halo 2, on NFSU2 the game will allow you to save a profile, and then immediately freeze.
What i have tried so far is using downloaded ISO's, thinking perhaps they were patched so they would work. I burnt them to disk, and tried FTPing the files over. Neither worked. I have tried using Retail Game Disks, both using DVD2XBOX, and playing straight from the DVD drive, and still the same result. I have used both XBMC and UnleashX as the main dashboards, and still its the same result.
I have tried the retail game disks in a unmodded xbox, and they do work. The funny thing is that i went back to the Boot Softmod Menu, and removed the softmod, at this point, you would think that the game would work from the DVD tray. But no, it now does the exact same thing again. I am at a total loss here...
If there are any questions that i can answer, or any help that could be given, i would REALLY appreciate it, lol. I have been trying to figure this out for 3 weeks now.

This isn't exactly the most direct answer, but since my knowledge is limited, I thought it would be good to make sure this is stated.
Backup your EEPROM.bin file to your computer.
Should a softmod console's hard drive fail, you can always use xboxhdm, SPPV's autobuilder or babylon to create a new xbox hard drive. All they final two options require is the EEPROM.bin file for the magic to work.
Basically what I told you is be prepared to reinstall your xbox OS if needed. Just make sure to have that EEPROM.bin file sitting around, I've had to repartition and reformat my xbox hard drives occasionally.
