I am new to XBOX so I don't know if it is normal.

But I have softmodded my box with SID 4.5 and installed XBMC (loving it).

But when I restart or shutdown, the XBOX takes about 5 minutes to get me back to XBMC. It sounds like the HD is doing a scan disk or something.

How can I stop this from happening??

I'd check your network settings, if its DHCP and not connected, it will attempt to make connections before starting.
Might try clearing your E drive cache too.
Lastly, check your settings for PAL/NTSC and be sure it's correct.
