Hey all, my daughter has been bugging the hell out of me to take a trip to New York City. I have only stayed in NY City once in my entire life and I was only 18 years old at the time so I cannot even remember what I paid for the hotel, although I do remember it being $100.00 approximately, and it was called the Edison Hotel. I remember it was in the heart of downtown and I could see people leaving broadway shows right from my hotel room window. A short walk and I was at the area where most people are familiar with, seeing the big SONY TV and all the lights and such.
Has anyone recently went to NY and can share some tips and such? I dont know the first place to stay, or not stay for that matter. I want to be as close to things as possible. I saw where you can book those double decker bus tours, and what is really cool they are hop on and hop off types of tours. Meaning, every 15 minutes at predisclosed areas like Empire State building, Rockefeller center, etc..etc... you can just hope off the bus and then get back on when you are done at that area and get to the next. These things are only $35.00 for a two day pass and probably saves a ton of money on taxi fares!!
So, I am probably going to do that, but I really want to stay somewhere that is middle of the road. I dont need luxury, but at the same time I dont' want to stay in a dump.
This is only going to be a weekend getaway, so I am not wanting to dump a few thousand dollars just for some site-seeing. Anyway, anybody with info, tips, and such...please let me know.
PEACE!

Thanks, but I am looking for personal experiences.
I have went to these types of sites and read them till I was blue in the face. I'd rather hear what someone from hear has to say about a particular hotel than what the hotel has to say about their hotel
I did find a pretty cool forum for travelers and read some feedbacks in regard to specific hotels. So, I did find a few that I am pursuing, but am still open to other suggestiond based on personal experiences.
I am also thinking about taking an Amtrak train from Pittsburgh to New York instead of flying or driving...or , I may just fly into Newark NJ and bus it to NY... That way I am not on a train for 9 hours.. It would be different if I was staying for a week, but since it's just a weekend getaway I dont want to spend one day on a train (including return trip).
Thanks man. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

NYC.. I wish..
Isnt Conan Obrien in New York??
He's a funny bastard.. I would love to see him if i ever got to see USA/NYC..
You enter where in Ny you wanna stay what Stars you want and you can even submit a price to what you wanna spend. I have a guy here that did it and stayed at the WALDORF for 100$ a night. He had a blast. the uhm busses yeah that may be a good deal to do also, but make sure you walk aroudn the twin tower site area, It really got me!! I went to the churches also right around the area and also the shoot forgot the nameof it but twhere they have the big christmas tree and even to the FAO Schartz. we walked the whole thing and didnt take too much time. I am sure the hotels you stay will have those kinda bus deals also, there is even a holiday INN check that out it should be right around that area. FAO Schartz also lets the kids stomp on the big keyboard also and they do a demo. Well worth the trip if you end up not doion a bus deal. you can ride the MEtro's also they are cheap and have all day passes also, they are safe too just dont do them too late at night. I took muy family up there and had a great time. ALSO if you go the Twin Tower site there is a little resturant on the corner by where they have the big signs and pics of the towers and such (cant miss it, but that place is reknowned for the corn beef sandwiches, check that place out they got lots of other food buit the sandwiches are amazing!!!! let me know how it goes.

I'm originally from NY and travel there often to visit my family. There is a Comfort Inn down by MSG, somewhere between 29th St and 32nd St. That's where I normally stay if I can't get the Edison. They normally charge $85 to $120 per night. It's pretty decent. The only thing is that you would have to walk about 9 blocks to get to Times Sq. But you will be close to Macy's just in case the missus wants something. LOL.
Other than that, there is another motel on 47th St. Around the corner from the new Toys R us I can't remember the name, that is fairly reasonable $100-135 per night. If I remember I will let you know. Also keep in mind that you are going for the weekend so the rates will be higher. I'm going to NY in June and I am currently looking for a hotel to stay in ( rule no.1 if your visiting your family DO NOT STAY WITH THEM.) They drive me up the wall with the " How's the weather in Florida?" questions. _________________

Yeah, it was so bad last time that I told them I had to leave early and spent the last 3 days in a hotel in Manhattan. Come to think of it, I do that every time I go there.LOL. Oh well better for me I guess. Next time some one down here maybe I'll ask them "so how's the crime rate in NY" just so they know how I feel... _________________

ModGod,
I sent you an e-mail with some recommendations, if you need more PM me and I'll get you some. My brother is a bouncer in NY so he is always staying in hotels to get some sleep. He could recommend a few as well. Check those out and let me know if you found something or need more. _________________

Cool...THE EDISON..wow, I actually stayed there once. I looked around for that hotel and didnt find anything.
When I was 18 years old I took a weekend with my girlfriend and flew to Newark NJ and then bussed to NYC and stayed two nights at the Edison. I really liked that place. It was my first time in NYC and it was right in the middle of the action.
Thanks for the hotel names, that was just what I was looking for. I was looking on all the expedia's, priclelines, and stuff like that, but wanted some personal experiences.
We are going to take a train I think, I haven't been on a train forever. The three of us can take a train to NYC for 270.00 total! 9 hrs sucks to lose in travel, thats like a whole day when you count the return trip. But, I dont want to pay 350.00 per person to friggin fly either...that is a joke. I can fly to Chicago for $29.00 each way, which is twice as far as NYC, but to fly to NYC costs me 350.00.... go figure.....lol.
I actually had to bag this idea temporarily depending on the outcome of a few things going on, hopefully I can take her there. We always go to Ocean City every year, which we are doing this year again, but I wanted to take her to NYC because there are two places she always talks about wanting to see and that is one of them. She has bugged me to go to NYC since she was 5 years old.
